IRVINE, Calif. -

The Cal State Northridge women's basketball participated in Big West Media Day Wednesday. Attending the event for the Matadors was head coach Staci Schulz and senior guard Tonicia Tademy.

"I feel like this group has the best team chemistry of any squad I have ever had at Northridge and we are eager to get the season started," Schulz said. "Tonicia Tademy is a natural leader and is ready to pick up where she left off last season."

Last year, Tademy led the Big West Conference with 110 assists, an average of 4.1 per game. She also finished second in the conference by averaging 2.1 steals per game in her first season at Northridge. She also averaged 4.9 points and rebounds per game after appearing in all 27 contests.

"Practices have been hard so far, but we are all working very hard and continue to improve," Tademy said. "Everyone on this team is capable of stepping up and leading this team. I have been very impressed with the play of our returners and our newcomers and am excited to hit the hardwood."

The Big West Conference also conducted its annual preseason coaches and media polls at the event, as well as surveying the league's coaches for the preseason All-Big West Team. Northridge was picked to finish ninth in both polls, receiving 10 votes in the coaches' poll and 16 in the media poll.

UC Riverside was picked to finish first in both the media and coaches poll.

The league's coaches also selected the Preseason All-Big West Team. Chosen for the squad were UC Davis' Haylee Donaghe, LBSU's Karina Figueroa, UC Riverside's Seyram Gbewonyo and Kemie Nkele, UCSB's Jenna Green and Cal State Fullerton's Toni Thomas.

The Matadors open their season Saturday when they face Love and Basketball in an exhibition contest at The Matadome starting at 2 p.m.
