Matadors Meet Titans Saturday in Pivotal League Game

Northridge Looks to stay in Playoff Contention Saturday

Still trying to claw their way into the Big West Tournament, the Cal State Northridge women's basketball team hosts Cal State Fullerton Saturday at The Matadome. Despite the loss to UC Irvine, the Matadors can still make a run at the conference tournament in Anaheim by winning two of their last five games, three of which are at home.

It all starts Saturday when the Titans arrive to face a Northridge team that defeated them, 87-82, on Jan. 21. The win marked CSUN's only road victory of the season as senior Whitney Ligon scored 28 and freshman Jasmine Erving added 24. CSUF has won one of its last nine contests, a 62-51 decision over Pacific at home on Jan. 12.

Upcoming Promotions

Saturday's game against Fullerton will be high school night with all high school students receiving free admission to the game with their student I.D. On Mar. 7, the Matadors will try to set a new attendance record in the "Pack the House Challenge" and will also honors its three graduating seniors.

Matadors Among Top Turnarounds in Country

Having already won five games in the 2008-09 season, the Cal State Northridge women's basketball team is now tied for 19th in Division I. The Matadors are tied with Charleston, Richmond, Morehead State, Maryland-Baltimore County, Miami (FL), Alabama, Colorado State and Colgate.

Tademy among National and Conference Leaders

Not only did she set a school record with her 156 assists, senior Tonicia Tademy leads the Big West with an average of 6.5 assists-per-game after posting her fourth double-figure assist game of the season with a career-high 12 against Cal Poly. She ranks sixth in the nation at 6.5 apg as of Feb. 15.

Li-Gon Me When You're Not Strong

Senior Whitney Ligon continues to lead the Matadors in scoring at 11.0 ppg. Ligon is seventh in school history with 71 career treys. She is also second in free throw shooting on the team at .760 which ranks seventh in the Big West Conference.

Dishing it out for T-Time

Senior Tonicia Tademy looks likely to repeat as the conference leader in assists (156) and assists per game (6.5). She now owns the school record for assists in a single season and her 12 assists against Cal Poly tied for the second-best performance in school history for a single game. Her 1.57 assist-to-turnover ratio ranks 58th in the nation as of Feb. 15 and leads the Big West Conference.

Stay off the Train Tracks

Junior Katrina Thompson continues to be the heart and soul of the Matadors, averaging a career-high 7.1 points and 6.3 rebounds. She posted the first four double-doubles of her career in a four-game stretch during league play and also scored a career-high 18 points against Cal Poly. She also leads the Matadors with 51 steals, an average of 2.1 per game, the third-best mark in the league.

Freshman Jasmine Erving has already established herself as one of the conference's top post players, averaging 9.7 points and 5.9 rebounds, figures that jump to 10.9 and 6.8 in league play. She is shooting a team-high .449 from the field and also leads the team with 30 blocked shots.

She's Blake!

With only a handful of games left in her career, senior Ashley Blake continues to be the Matadors' most consistent long-range threat. She leads the team with a career-high 40 3-pointers, tied for the ninth-most in school history. She is also shooting 77.8 percent from the free throw line to average a career-high 8.3 points.

Matadors sign four Recruits to Begin Play in 2009-10 Season

Head Coach Staci Schulz announced on Nov. 26 that the Matadors had signed four high school seniors to National Letters of Intent. Violet Alama (Kalani HS/Honolulu, Hawai'i), Felicia Walker (McClymonds HS/Oakland, Calif.), Amanda Thomson (Auburn Riverside HS/Auburn Riverside, Wash.) and Janelle Nomura (Punahou HS/Honolulu, Hawai'i) will all play their college basketball at Cal State Northridge beginning in the 2009-10 season.
