Slow Start Dooms Matadors in Loss to No. 20 Cyclones

AMES, Iowa - The Cal State Northridge women's basketball team (0-12) lost 93-47 to No. 20 Iowa State Monday evening at Hilton Coliseum. Junior Jasmine Erving scored a team-high 21 points, one off her season best, and Haley White added 13 points, including three 3-pointers, for CSUN.
Facing their first ranked opponent in over three seasons, Northridge fell behind early to the No. 20 Cyclones, trailing 32-5 seven minutes into the game. Sixteen of those points in the paint and CSUN started the contest just 1-of-14 (7.1 percent) from the field. From that deficit, CSUN trailed 51-15 at the half. Janelle Nomura had seven points at the break for the Matadors.
The second half proved a little gentler to CSUN, as the Matadors out-shot the Cyclones percentage-wise, 46.2 (12-of-26) to 43.3 (13-of-30). Erving had 17 of her 21 points in the final 20 minutes and White added 11 points in the second frame.
For the game, CSUN shot 29.3 percent from the field (17-of-58) and 27.3 percent (6-of-22) from 3-point range. Iowa State finished at 54 percent (34-of-63) from the field and at 42.9 percent (9-of-21) from 3-point range.
The Cyclones battered the Matadors inside throughout the game, finishing with 44 points in the paint. They also out-rebounded Northridge 53-24 for the game.
Erving added a team-high six rebounds, two assists, two blocks and a steal to her final line. She is now averaging a team-high 11.9 points on the season.
White drained a season-best three 3-pointers and finished with 13 points, a season high, for the second-straight game. She added three assists, two steals and two rebounds to her final line and is now averaging 4.8 points for the year.
Four Cyclones finished in double-figures, led by Kelsey Bolte's 16 points. Lauren Mansfield had 10 assists to one turnover and seven players had at least four rebounds in the game for ISU.
Following the Christmas holiday, CSUN opens its 2010-11 Big West Conference season with road games at Pacific and UC Davis. The Matadors and Tigers will meet on New Year's Eve at 2 p.m., and Northridge and UC Davis usher in 2011 with a 2 p.m. contest on Jan. 2.
The Matadors finally return home on Jan. 5 for a league contest against Long Beach State at 7 p.m.
