Matadors Post 69-53 Victory over Cal Lutheran in Exhibition Opener

The Cal State Northridge women's basketball team defeated Cal Lutheran, 69-53, in its exhibition home opener Monday night at The Matadome. Junior Bianca Davies led all scorers with 18 points while sophomores Jasmine Erving and Bridgette Conejo added 16 and 15 points, respectively, for Northridge in the victory.

The Matadors came out aggressive in their first contest of the 2009-10 season, taking a 34-23 lead at halftime. They were especially effective from 3-point range, hitting 5-of-10 attempts. The lead swelled to as much as 27 points with 3:25 left in the second half.

Davies poured in what would have been a career-high 18 points off the bench for CSUN, hitting 7-of-9 shots from the field including a pair of 3-pointers. She also had two rebounds and two free throws.

Erving waas 6-of-12 from the field and had six rebounds in 17 minutes of action. Conejo started and played a team-high 33 minutes and was 6-of-8 from the field with two 3-pointer. She also had a team-high five assists.

Freshman Violet Alama led all players with 16 rebounds, grabbing 11 in the first half. The rookie also had three blocks and one steal in 27 minutes of action. Another player making her debut for the home crowd was Amanda Thomson, who came off the bench to chip in six points, three rebounds and three assists in 17 minutes of action.

In all, Northridge shot 44.1 percent from the field (26-of-59) and grabbed 48 rebounds. The Matadors added 26 second-chance points and scored 26 points in the paint.

Brianna Parker and Channing Fleischmann had nine points for the Regals, who shot 28.3 percent from the field.

The Matadors play a second exhibition contest Saturday, hosting Westmont College at The Matadome at 4 p.m. The game is part of a Northridge Basketball doubleheader, as the men's team will play The Master's College at 7 p.m.
