Slow Second Half Cements Matadors' Fate in Loss to Gauchos

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge women's basketball team (1-20, 1-7 Big West) lost 71-48 to UC Santa Barbara Saturday afternoon at The Matadome. Analee Viena-Lota finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds and Amanda Thomson added 13 points off the bench, but the Matadors saw a first-half lead quickly dissolve.
For the second-straight game, Northridge took a lead into halftime. For the second-straight game, their opponent came out in the second half and went on a large run.
Thursday, UC Irvine strung together a 29-4 run in the second half. Saturday, UCSB opened the second half on a 34-9 run to take a 60-35 lead with seven minutes left in the game. CSUN would get no closer than 18 the rest of the way and fell to 0-9 at home in the 2010-11 season.
Viena-Lota continued to scale CSUN's career rebounding charts. The 10 boards pushed her four-year total to 506 and moved her past Regan O'Hara for eighth in school history. The double-double was eighth of Viena-Lota's career and second of the season. She added two 3-pointers and an assist and steal in 34 minutes of action.
Thomson made her first appearance on the court since Dec. 8 and made it count. She came off the bench to finish with 13 points, including two 3-pointers. She also had two rebounds and an assist in 19 minutes of action.
As a team, CSUN shot 27.4 percent (17-of-62) from the field, including a 19.4 percent (7-of-36) rate in the second half. UCSB finished at 44.4 percent (24-of-54) from the field. The Gauchos out-rebounded the Matadors, 44-36, and had 26 points in the paint to CSUN's 14.
Mekia Valentine led four Gauchos in double figures with 16 points and 12 rebounds.
In addition to Thomson, the Matadors also saw the return of redshirt junior Bianca Davies. It was the first time in over a year that Davies played for the Matadors after suffering a knee injury in November of 2009.
Northridge remains at home for their next game, a Feb. 3 meeting with UC Riverside. The Matadors and Highlanders will square off from The Matadome at 7 p.m.
