NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge Matadors (3-13, 1-5 BWC) could not overcome a late first half run by the Cal Poly Mustangs (12-6, 5-2 BWC), as they dropped a 73-60 decision on Saturday afternoon at the Matadome. The Mustangs seized control in the latter of stages of the first half and held off a late rally by the Matadors in the final moments of the second half.
Down by as many 23 points, at 55-32 with 11:32 remaining in the contest, Northridge made a furious rally to cut the deficit to 66-58 with 1:50 left. CSUN simply ran out of time though and could not overtake Cal Poly in the final moments.
The Matadors played strong for most of Saturday's contest, but let the game slip from their grasp in the closing minutes of the first half.
With 8:56 remaining before halftime and the game tied at 15-15, the Mustangs took control. A 21-4 run gave Cal Poly a 36-19 cushion heading into intermission that ultimately was too much for Northridge to overcome.
Despite the impressive Mustang run, the Matadors finished with a better shooting percentage than their opposition (33.3- 32.3) in the opening half, but gave up key rebounds and second chance points. Cal Poly outrebounded Northridge 31-17, including having a 12-0 advantage in offensive rebounds which resulted in 12 points.
Katrina Thompson scored nine points, dished out four assists and had four steals. Violet Alama gave the Matadors energy and defense off the bench, setting new season highs in points (6) and blocks (4).
The Matadors achieved new season highs in the contest in assists (18) and blocks (6). They also pounded the ball in the middle, scoring 40 of their 60 points in the paint. Coming in 20th in the nation in three point shooting percentage (37.9), the Matadors struggled from behind the arc and shot 0-for-8 from downtown.
In the opening 11:04 of the contest, the Matadors and Mustangs battled back and forth, as the each team took turns taking the lead. The early portion of the game saw the two teams exchange lead five times, before Cal Poly seized the momentum of the first half.
Cal State Northridge will hit the road for a Big West Conference match-up with the Long Beach State 49ers next Thursday. Tip-off is slated for a 7:00 pm start time.
