DAVIS, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge women's basketball team (1-13, 1-1 Big West) lost 78-56 to UC Davis Sunday afternoon at The Pavilion. Junior Jasmine Erving scored a season-high 23 points and seven free throws for the Matadors, who could not overcome a slow start to the second half.
After a competitive opening 20 minutes that saw CSUN trail by only eight, UC Davis, the Big West preseason favorite, opened the second half on an 18-5 run. The Matadors battled throughout the rest of the second half, but could not get any closer than 17 for the remainder of the game.
Erving was a force inside all game, recording the 39th double-figure game of her career. She finished 8-of-16 from the field and 7-of-9 from the free throw line. Both the field goal and free throw makes set new season highs and she also led the Matadors with seven rebounds.
Beyond Erving, several Northridge players finished between four and nine points. Janelle Nomura finished with nine points, four assists and three rebounds. Bridgette Conejo came off the bench to score eight points and grab two rebounds.
Haley White added six points on two 3-pointers and had six rebounds and three assists. The six boards tied a season high for the rookie. Janet Alvarado finished with a season-high four points and four rebounds.
As a team, Northridge shot 40.8 percent (20-of-49) from the field. The Matadors won the rebounding battle as well, finishing with 39 boards to the Aggies' 34. However, the key statistic in the game was each team's turnovers. CSUN coughed the ball up 22 times Sunday afternoon, resulting in 32 points for UCD. Conversely, the Aggies had only six turnovers.
Vicky Deely led five Aggies in double-figures with 22 points, including five 3-pointers.
Northridge went into halftime trailing 38-30. Nomura had five points at the break while Erving added 12 points.
After a lengthy span away from home, CSUN returns to The Matadome for an important Big West match-up with Long Beach State. The Matadors and 49ers will meet on Jan. 5 for a 7 p.m. contest.
