Guay Surpasses 1,000 Career Points as CSUN Downs UCR

RIVERSIDE, Calif. ---

Cinnamon Lister led four Matadors in double figures with 23 points as the Cal State Northridge women's basketball team (9-12, 5-2 Big West) defeated UC Riverside 71-61 Thursday evening at the SRC Arena. Bernadette Fong finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds to record her second career double-double and Ashlee Guay scored 13 to become the 10th player in program history to reach 1,000 points for her career.

Thursday's victory over the Highlanders constituted a total team effort from the Matadors. CSUN grabbed 51 rebounds, outscored UCR in the Paint (24-10) and saw its bench also outscore the Highlanders (23-11).

Defensively, the Matadors clamped down on the Highlanders and held UCR to 29.9 percent shooting (20-of-67) for the evening. The Highlanders finished the game 3-of-15 (20 percent) from 3-point range and 18-of-27 (66.7 percent) from the free throw line.

After falling behind by four early, CSUN closed the first half on a 23-13 run to take a 37-29 lead into halftime. Lister had 13 and Fong had 10 at the break for the Matadors.

In the second half, Guay scored 11 of her 13 points and became the 10th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points. She started out the frame quickly by converting an old-fashioned three-point play.

"It is a great to score a 1,000 points, but I am happier that we got the win tonight," Guay said. "Our mindset is the next game in store, which is Saturday vs. Hawai'i."

UCR would get no closer than seven the rest of the way as CSUN connected on enough of its free throws down the stretch.

Lister finished with 20+ points for the seventh time this season. She was 8-of-15 from the field, knocked down four 3-pointers and had five rebounds in 36 minutes of action.

Guay was 4-of-11 from the field with two 3-pointers, five rebounds and an assist in 20 minutes of work. She needs seven more assists to set a new program all-time record.

Fong was 6-of-11 from the field and tied a career high with 11 rebounds. She also played a career-high 20 minutes in Thursday's win.

Janae Sharpe was the fourth Matador in double figures, finishing with 10 points. She added eight rebounds and two assists in the victory.

For CSUN, Randi Friess tied a career high with nine rebounds and added two points and a block. Camille Mahlknecht came off the bench to finish with six points, seven rebounds and four blocks.

Kiara Harewood and Annelise Ito each had 14 points for UCR in defeat.

CSUN returns to action on Saturday to face Hawai'i at The Matadome. Tip off between the Matadors and Rainbow Wahine is slated for 4 p.m. and the game will be featured on Big West TV.
