The Cal State Northridge women's basketball team (15-15, 9-9 Big West) defeated UC Riverside 55-54 Saturday afternoon at The Matadome in both team's regular season finale. Sophomore Ashlee Guay scored the game-winning basket with three seconds left to propel the Matadors to the victory on Senior Day.
CSUN led 51-43 with 5:33 left in the second half. UC Riverside then answered with a 11-2 run to take a brief one-point lead. Randi Friess made a lay-up with 32 second left to put CSUN back up one, but the Highlanders responded with a jumper with 20 seconds left to reclaim the lead.
That left it to the final possession and Guay came through in the clutch once again. Reminiscent of her game-winning shot against UC Davis, Guay scored the winning basket wit h three seconds left on the clock to lift the Matadors to victory.
"We drew up a play in the huddle and with the clock winding down, I just took the ball to the basket hoping my teammates would be there to rebound," Guay said. "Fortunately, it went in. We knew we had to do it for the seniors."
Guay finished with 11 points, four assists, four steals and two rebounds in 39 minutes of action. At 90 steals on the season, she is two shy of breaking her own school record for most steals in a season.
Haley White led the Matadors with 13 points and added six rebounds, five steals and two assists off the bench in 28 minutes.
Friess finished with eight points and four rebounds while Camille Mahlknecht chipped in six points, six rebounds and two blocked shots.
As a team, CSUN shot 34.5 percent (20-of-58) from the field and 21.1 percent (4-of-19) from 3-point range. UCR finished at 37.9 percent (22-of-58) from the field and 36.4 percent (4-of-11) from beyond the arc.
The Highlanders won the rebounding battle, 46-32, but their 24 turnovers resulted in 19 Matador points. UCR's Brittany Crain led all scorers with 23 points.

With the victory, CSUN claims the sixth seed for the 2013 Big West Women's Basketball Tourmanent.
The Matadors will face UC Davis in the opening round on Tuesday, Mar. 12 at The Bren Events Center on the campus of UC Irvine.
Tip off between the Matadors and Aggies is slated for 30 minutes after the completion of the first game, likely to be around 8:30 p.m.
