RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Sophomore Lilyana Morejon ran 17.26.5 to post the second fastest time in Northridge history at the UC Riverside Cross Country Invitational Saturday at the UCR Farm Course.
Morejon finished 10th to lead the Matador women to a 13th-place finish (out of 34 competing schools) as a team. Northridge posted a total team time of 1:35:01.40 and an average time of 19:00.28.
The sophomore from North Hollywood finished just behind Darcy Arreola's time of 17.13.7 ran on the same 5k course in 1986. Andrea Palacio also ran a solid time of 17:41.7 at the UCR Invitational in 2003.
Morejon's 10th-place finish paced the Matador women, who also got a 53rd-place finish from Nanci Velarde (18:36.3), a 62nd-place finish from Sandra Velarde (18:48.4), a 114th-place finish from Sharon Wilkinson (19:29.8), a 213th-place finish from Julie Brandin (20:41.5), a 219th-place finish from Marissa Crook (20:48.0), a 242nd-place finish from Leslie Ching (21:16.0) and a 271st-place finish from Susan Padilla (22:00.4).
In the men's 8k, Northridge finished 18th out of 25 teams as senior Diego Fernandez finished a Matador-best 34th in a time of 25:41.2. Juan Olea, who ran over two minutes faster than his time last year, finished 58th (26:15.7) followed by Mark Simpson (158th - 27:51.3), Gustavo Hernandez (200th - 28:31.8), Eduardo Garcia (226th - 29:23.8) and Marvin Gonzales (239th - 29:55.2).
Both Matador teams will return to action this Saturday, Oct. 4 as the men and women will run at the Pepperdine Invitational.
