RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Lilyana Morejon' fifth-place finish paced the Cal State Northridge women's cross country team as the women finished 12th while the men placed 25th at the UC Riverside Invitational at the UCR Farm Course on Saturday.
Morejon, a junior from North Hollywood, posted her second top-five finish in as many meets this season as she ran 17:07.1 to finish fifth on the women's 5k course. Morejon finished third at the UC Irvine Invitational last week in a time 17:26.80.
Also for Northridge, junior transfer Zitalic Ley, who was 26th at UC Irvine, ran 18:12.0 to finish 64th on Saturday. Nanci Velarde finished 97th in a time of 18:41.4, Mallory Day was 116th in a time of 18:53.7, Sandra Velarde was 119th in a time of 18:57.9, Marissa Crook placed 162nd in a time of 19:38.5, Ana Rosales was 168th in a time of 19:42.2 and Ariana Gomez was 196th in a time of 20:54.8. Nearly every Matador runner posted an improvement over their season-opening time.
As a team, the Matadors posted an average time of 18:22.42, which was :20 seconds faster than at UC Irvine. Northridge posted a total time of 1:31:52.10 and 373 total points.
UC Riverside was the women's team champion with 89 points, BYU finished second with 98 and Azusa Pacific was third with 106.
In the men's 8k, the Matadors finished 25th as a team with 722 points and an average time of 26:08.10. Juan Olea was the highest Northridge finisher as he placed 105th in a time of 26:17.3. Masis Hagobian placed 213th in a time of 27:48.3, Gustavo Hernandez placed 218th in a time of 27:52.9 which was almost three minutes faster than the opening meet of the season. Juan Hernandez finished 246th in a time of 28:33.7 and Steven Gonzales was 302nd in a time of 30:08.3.
BYU won the men's race with 23 points, UC Riverside was second at 73, Southern Utah was third with 131 and Loyola Marymount placed fourth with 156 points.
