Matador Women Sixth, Men 18th at Asics/UCI Invitational

IRVINE, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge women's cross country team finished sixth while the men placed 18th at the season-opening the Asics/UCI Invitational Saturday at the Anteater Recreation Center Field.

Junior Lilyana Morejon paced the Matador women with a third-place finish as she continues to build on her solid sophomore season in 2008. Morejon posted a time of 17:26.80 on the 5k course. Dallon Williams of Cal State San Marcos won in a time of 17:21.70.

Also for Northridge, junior transfer Zitalic Ley finished 26th in a time of 18:34.80 in her first race as a Matador. Sandra Velarde was 47th in a time of 19:00.50, Nanci Velarde finished 58th in a time of 19:09.50, Mallory Day was 77th in a time of 19:28.60, Anastacia Digiallondro finished 101st in a time of 19:59.90, Ana Rosales was 110th in a time of 20:16.50, Marissa Crook placed 116th in a time of 20:35.70, Julie Brandin was 133rd in a time of 21:29.70 and Ariana Gomez was 141st in a time of 21:56.20.

As a team, the Matadors posted an average time of 18:44.04 and a total time of 1:33.40.20. Northridge tied with Concordia with a total of 194.

Cal Poly was the women's team champion with 74 points, Chico State finished second with 84 and Cal State San Marcos third with 121. UCI had 215 points for ninth place.

For the men, Juan Olea finished a team-best 69th in a time of 26:55.80. Masis Hagobian placed 120th in a time of 28:04.20, Danny Garcia was 137th in a time of 28:33.80, Juan Hernandez finished 158th in a time of 29:07.50, Steven Gonzales was 165th in a time of 29:18.60 and Gustavo Hernandez placed 193rd in a time of 30:38.30.

Northridge's total of 468 left the Matadors 18th with an average time of 28:23.98 on the 8k course.

Chico State won the 21-team race with 36 points, Cal Poly was second at 65, Fresno State third with 110 and UC Irvine placed fourth with 125 points.

The Matador men's and women's teams return to action Sept. 26 at the Stanford University Invitational.
