The Cal State Northridge men's and women's cross country teams will open the 2012 season Saturday (Sept. 8) at the adidas/UC Irvine Invitational.
The Matadors will look to improve on a 2011 season that saw both the men's and women's squads finish eighth at the conference championship. CSUN returns a host of their top performers from a season ago including Hunter Hays and Julio Mora for the men and Fany Alvarado, Yvonne Castillo-Urbina and Araceli Zainos for the women.
Hays finished as the top CSUN male in a pair of meets last season including a fourth-place finish at the UNLV Desert Invitational. Mora had a 13th-place finish last season at UNLV. Alvarado was the top finisher for the Matador women in three meets in 2011 while Castillo-Urbina is CSUN's top returning finisher from last season's conference championship.
Other CSUN runners sheduled to compete this weekend include: Martin Santillan, Eddie Garcia, Ezekial Glass and Marcelo Rosales on the men's side with Santillan and Rosales will be making their Matador debut. Joining Alvarado, Castillo-Urbina and Zainos on the women's squad, Vanessa Carr, Annalise Lopez, Kaitlin Janes, Alexis Pichardo and Kendahl Waalk.
Following the UC Irvine meet, the Matadors will travel to invitationals at San Diego State (Sept. 15), UNLV (Sept. 29), UC San Diego (Oct. 6) and Cal State Fullerton (Oct. 19). In addition, the Matadors will host the CSUN Invitational on Oct. 13, the Big West Championships are slated for Oct. 27 at UC Riverside.
