Matador Women 16th, Men 23rd at UC Riverside Invitational

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Cal State Northridge sent both men's and women's cross country teams to the UC Riverside Invitational where the women finished 16th while the men were 23rd.

Fany Alvarado was the top CSUN finisher in the women's 6k race. Alvarado placed 70th in a time of 22:24.9. Yvonne Castillo-Urbina was next in 74th-place after running 22:29.3.

The remainder of the Matador runners finished outside of the top-100. Ana Rosales (22:58.5) was 103rd, Araceli Zainos (23:29.0) was 117th, Legia Pendergraph (23:52.1) was 129th and Jasmine Cox (26:35.2) was 164th among the 167 runners in the field.

As a team, the Northridge women finished 16th out of 20 teams with 431 points and an average time of 23:02.76.

In the women's 5k several Matador runners made their 2011 debut including Natalie Wollaston (21:09.0) who finished a CSUN-best 179th. Desiree Karotko (21:51.0) was 203rd, Lindsay Anderson (22:59.6) was 220th and Crystal Spears (24:36.9 ) finished 237th.

In the men's 8k, Hunter Hays had the Matadors' top time as he finished 148th in 26:33.8. Cesar Lopez finished 157th in 26:41.3, Marvin Gonzalez was 162nd in 26:47.6, Tawei Ma was 185th in 27:21.1, Julio Mora was 190th in 27:28.9, Masis Hagobian was 213th in 28:14.8 and Steven Gonzales was 219th in 28:32.7. A total of 242 runners competed in the men's race.

As a team, the men clocked an average time of 26:58.54 and had 624 points in finishing 23rd out of 25 teams.
