Quartet of Matadors Named to All-MPSF Men's Volleyball Team

April 22, 2010

Led by first team selections Kevin McKniff and Jacek Ratajczak, Cal State Northridge had four players named to the 2010 All-MPSF Men's Volleyball team announced Thursday by the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.

McKniff and Ratajczak both earned first team honors for the first time in their careers while senior Mike Gaudino and sophomore Matt Stork both earned honorable mention accolades. This season marked the first time in Northridge men's volleyball history that two Matadors have earned first team All-MPSF honors.

McKniff, a senior middle blocker from Tucson, Ariz., was an honorable mention selection as a sophomore in 2008 and a third team pick as a junior in 2009. This season he led the conference in hitting at .502 while leading the Matadors in total blocks with 117.

"Kevin has gotten better and better each season he's been here," said head coach Jeff Campbell. "He's been with us for five years and has really put in the time so it's great to see his hard work pay off."

Ratajczak, a middle blocker from Warsaw, Poland, was a second team All-MPSF selection as a junior as well as a second team AVCA All-American. This season he earns first team All-MPSF honors for the first time. He finished the regular season third in the conference in hitting at .460 and was third on the Matadors in kills (322) and second in total blocks (115).

"Jack has also gotten better each season," said Campbell. "Even if the recognition wasn't there necessarily he's gotten better every single year. Both Jack and Kevin have been our go-to guys all season long," added Campbell. "Even when the ball is passed eight or 10 feet off the net we still go to those guys and they've both hit at such a high percentage all year long. We're happy they they were able to get first team All-MPSF."

Gaudino, a senior outside hitter from La Canada, Calif., garnered All-MPSF honors for the first time despite being an iron man for the Matadors over the past four years. Gaudino, who has played in 122 matches (420 games) in his career, was fourth on the team in kills with 246, second in digs with 251 and third in blocks with 94.

"Mike doesn't always, statistically, lead our team but does other things for us," said Campbell. "He's a team leader, is one of our best passers and is a very consistent server. He's been a four-year starter and has been a big reason why we've done so well the past few years."

Stork, a sophomore setter from Topanga, Calif., was also named honorable mention after earning third team accolades as a freshman in 2009. Stork ranked third in the MPSF in the regular season with 1,337 assists (13.37 apg) and already ranks sixth in Northridge history in assists with 3,027. He also improved his defense this season, ranking third on the Matadors in digs with 189 and was fourth in blocks with 73.

"Matt had the most votes out of any player named to the Honorable Mention team," said Campbell. "He's been really consistent all year and has done a nice job for us, but there's so many good players out there that sometimes it's hard to get everybody you want to get on the top three teams."

Cal State Northridge finished the regular season with a 21-8 overall record and a number three national ranking. The Matadors finished 15-7 in the MPSF which tied for second place, the best-ever finish for a Northridge team in the conference.

"This is the highest finish we've ever had as a team and these guys are mainly responsible for our position," said Campbell. "It is a team sport and a lot of guys helped, but these are our main offensive guys and these are the guys that have propelled us to where we're at right now."

Northridge meets USC in an MPSF Tournament quarterfinal match this Saturday, Apr. 24. First serve in The Matadome is scheduled for 7 p.m.
