Matadors Drop Four-Set Decision at No. 3 UCLA, 25-19, 25-19, 22-25, 25-17

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - 11th-ranked Cal State Northridge wound up its six-match, season-opening road swing with a 25-19, 25-19, 22-25, 25-17 loss at third-ranked UCLA Wednesday night at Pauley Pavilion. Freshman Brandon Lebrock paced the Matadors with 12 kills.

The Matadors (2-4, 1-2 MPSF) have dropped three of their last four matches after opening the season 1-1. The Bruins (6-1, 1-0) claim their MPSF opener and have now won five consecutive matches.

Lebrock knocked down a match-high 12 kills, the fourth straight match the freshman has posted double figures in kills. He hit .308 in 26 swings to go with five digs and three blocks. Fellow freshman Greg Faulkner added a season-high 10 kills while hitting .467 in 15 attacks and freshman Cory Wagner chipped in eight kills (.263) and a season-high 10 digs. Faulkner also had a team-high five blocks, including three solo stuffs.

Senior Jeff Baxter came off the bench to post a season-high 21 assists while junior Matt Stork had 19. Kaleo Baxter matched Wagner with a match-high 10 digs.

Northridge was out-hit .295 to .195 and committed 20 service errors while being held without an ace for the first time this season. UCLA also out-blocked the Matadors 17-9.

The Matadors hit a match-high .281 in claiming the third set 25-22 but did not hit higher than .207 in any of the other three sets.

Jeremy Casebeer and Thomas Amberg each had 10 kills to lead UCLA which also got nine kills from Weston Dunlap.

Cal State Northridge returns home to host fifth-ranked UC Santa Barbara in its home opener Friday, Jan. 21 at 7 p.m.
