MATADORS RANKED 15TH IN AVCA TOP-15 POLL
Cal State Northridge, unranked for six weeks, is back in the AVCA Coaches Top-15 released Monday, Apr. 7. After upsetting both No. 9 UCLA (3-2) and No. 5 UC Santa Barbara (3-1), the Matadors earned 23 points this week, the most for CSUN since Feb. 17 when the Matadors were also 15th. CSUN, which has been ranked in six of the 15 weekly polls this season, has now been ranked in 191 of the last 212 weekly polls dating back to the 2002 season.
Loyola-Chicago (23-1) remained No. 1 for the ninth straight week as the Ramblers earned 16 of 18 first-place votes and 265 total points. Pepperdine (16-6) moved up to second with 247 and two first-place votes while BYU (18-6) is third with 228 points. Stanford (18-7) remained fourth this week while UC Santa Barbara (15-8) rounds out this week's top-five. UC Irvine (17-9) is sixth this week followed by Long Beach State (16-9), USC (16-10), Hawai'i (15-10) and UCLA (16-10). This week's AVCA Top-15 is filled out Lewis (19-6), Penn State (19-6), Ball State (19-7), IPFW (18-6) and the Matadors (10-15).
Loyola is also number one in this week's Volleyball Magazine Top-10 Poll. The Matadors, who received votes, remain unranked in the Volleyball poll in the 14th week of the season.
• Seventh-ranked Long Beach State enters the week with an overall record of 16-9 while the 49ers are tied for sixth in the MPSF at 13-9. Long Beach needs to win both matches this week to assure itself of a berth in the MPSF Tournament next week. The 49ers, 9-3 at home and 6-6 on the road this season, have lost three straight including a pair of 3-2 losses to UCSB and UCLA last week. Senior Taylor Crabb leads Long Beach State with 449 kills while averaging a team-high 4.78 kps which leads the MPSF. The 49ers are hitting .307 as a team which ranks third in the conference. Thursday's match is the 70th meeting all-time between the Matadors and Long Beach State with the 49ers holding a 38-31 edge in the series.
CSUN sophomore outside hitter Sam Holt was named Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Player of the Week on Monday (Apr. 7) after leading the Matadors to upset wins over No. 9 UCLA and No. 5 UCSB last week. Holt, a sophomore from Cincinnati, Ohio, had a monster match against the ninth-ranked Bruins on Apr. 3 as he pounded a career-high 37 kills while hitting .484 to pace CSUN to the five-set win. Holt's kill total is the most by a conference player in four years and the most by a Matador hitter since Eric Vance had 40 in 2008. With 40.5 of CSUN's 82.5 points in the match, Holt's point total is also the most by a MPSF player since 2010. He came back to put down a match-high 18 kills on 36 attacks (.333) in the Matadors' four-set win over the fifth-ranked Gauchos which gave Holt an average of 6.11 kills per set on .429 hitting for the week. He now has two of the top six kills performance in CSUN's rally scoring history
Junior Travis Magorien continues up the assists ladder in the CSUN record books in 2014. With 50 assists against UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, Magorien became just the eighth setter in CSUN history to suprass 2,000 career assists. With a team-high 873 assists this season, Magorien now has 2,010 career helpers which moves him past Dan Nash (1,950) into eighth-place on the CSUN career assists list. Magorien, who handed out a career-high 58 assists in the Matadors' 3-2 win over No. 9 UCLA on Thursday (Apr. 3), ranks fifth on the Matador Rally Scoring era assists list and is now averaging a career-best 9.70 assists per set this season.
Saturday's season-finale against Long Beach State will mark the final match for CSUN senior libero Charlie Condron. The lone senior on the 2014 squad, Condron has played in 69 matches (238 sets) as a Matador, starting 56 at the libero spot. He brings in career totals of 356 digs and a career average of 1.50 digs per set which ranks eighth on the CSUN rally scoring era list. Condron had a season-high 12 digs in the Matadors' 3-2 win over UCLA on Thursday and posted a career-high 20 digs against UC Santa Barbara as a sophomore in 2012.
Saturday Since being inserted back into the starting lineup at UC Irvine on Mar. 26, sophomore Vaughn Wellenreiter has put together the best four-match stretch of his brief CSUN career. Over his last 18 sets, Wellenreiter has 30 kills and just three errors on 54 attacks for an even .500 hitting clip ... The Matadors' four-set win over No. 5 UCSB was CSUN's first win in four this season while the five-set win over No. 9 UCLA improved the Matadors to 4-1 when going the distance ... Damani Lenore served up a career-high four aces in the win over UCLA.
Having become Cal State Northridge men's volleyball's all-time winningest coach during the 2010 season, Jeff Campbell picked up his most recent milestone win of his remarkable 17-year Matador career in Northridge's 3-2 win over 15th-ranked Ohio State on Saturday, Mar. 15. The victory gave the Matador boss his 250th career victory. Campbell, who now has a career record of 253-237 (.516), reached the 150, 200 and 225 career milestones over the last six seasons. Currently, the second-longest tenured head coach at Cal State Northridge (men's golf coach Jim Bracken is in his 28th season) Campbell has posted double figure win totals in 15 of his 17 seasons on the bench and notched a career-best 24 wins in 2009.
