LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Cal State Northridge men's volleyball won a pair of exhibition matches last Friday and Saturday at the two-day USC Fall Tournament. Redshirt freshman Damani Lenore and sophomore Sam Holt were among several Matadors who played well in the tournament according to Head Coach Jeff Campbell.
The Matadors opened Friday's action with a 25-22, 25-22 win over Lewis before dropping a 25-12, 25-21 decision to Long Beach State. Against Lewis, the combo of Lenore and Holt combined for 21 of CSUN's 37 kills while Greg Faulkner added six kills while hitting .500. Lenore, playing on the right side for the graduated John Baker, had 11 kills while hitting .304 on 23 swings.
Saturday opened with Lenore pounding 18 kills in 23 errorless swings to hit .783 as the Matadors defeated Cal Baptist 25-15, 25-21. Sakaida added six kills (.556) and three aces as CSUN hit .431 as a team. Lenore then added 10 kills (.190) and one ace in a 25-21, 25-15 loss to UC Santa Barbara.
Another redshirt freshman, Jakub Ciesla stood out in CSUN's final match, a 25-23, 25-18 loss to the host USC Trojans. Ciesla had a team-high 11 kills with just two errors in 9 attacks to hit .474.
"Over the course of the weekend we found that we have some strengths and we have some weaknesses," said Campbell. ""We're going to get better, I was very excited about how we played. Damani played really well, Sam played well and both our liberos played well."
