Despite sweeping UC San Diego in its only match of the week, Cal State Northridge slipped from seventh to eighth in this week's AVCA Coaches Top-15 poll. The Matadors earned 140 points this week, down 10 from the season-high 150 points CSUN received last week. Cal State Northridge has now been ranked in all 11 polls this season and 182 of the last 194 weekly polls dating back to the 2002 season. The last time the Matadors were unranked was a period of 12 weeks (Feb. 7-May 2) during the 2011 season. BYU (15-3) remained in the top spot for the second straight week as the Cougars received 15 of 16 first-place votes and 239 total points. UC Irvine (16-4) remained second this week collecting one first-place vote while Long Beach State (14-5) is third, Pepperdine (10-6) fourth and UCLA (11-9) rounds out this week's top-five. Stanford (12-8) is sixth this week followed by Lewis (14-5), the Matadors (10-6), Ohio State (14-3) and Hawaii (7-12). This week's top-15 is filled out by UCSB (9-12), Cal Baptist (8-11), Penn State (14-5), USC (4-11) and George Mason (9-8) ... CSUN moved up two places to a season-high sixth in the Volleyball Magazine Top-10 Poll after receiving a season-high 44 points. CSUN,  which had been eighth four straight weeks, has now been ranked in eight of the 10 Volleyball Magazine polls this season.

UC Santa Barbara (9-12, 7-10 MPSF) comes into Wednesday's match having won four of its past five matches. The Gauchos, ranked 11th this week by the AVCA, swept both No. 4 Stanford and No. 15 Pacific last week to improve to 7-4 at home this season. Sophomore opposite Matt Marsh leads UCSB with 184 kills (3.35 kpg) while sophomore Austin Kingi adds 2.43 kpg. The Gauchos are hitting .250 as a team through 21 matches. Wednesday's match is the 86th meeting all-time between CSUN and UCSB with the Gauchos holding a slight 47-38 edge. Northridge won the first meeting between the two teams, 3-2 in The Matadome behind 19 kills from Brandon Lebrock ... UCLA (13-9, 9-7 MPSF), which plays at No. 3 Long Beach State on Wednesday, is also hot lately having won five of its last seven matches. The Bruins also swept both Pacific and Stanford last week behind 22 kills from Gonzalo Quiroga. Quiroga leads UCLA averaging 3.59 kills per game followed closely by Robart Page who adds 3.43 kpg. The Bruins are hitting .305 as a team which ranks fourth in the MPSF. UCLA leads the all-time series 63-12-1 and won the first meeting between the two teams 3-2 in the season opener for both teams on Jan. 8 at Pauley Pavilion.

By picking up their 10th win of the season on Friday, the Matadors have now earned double figure wins in 13 of the last 14 seasons and 35th time in the 37 years of Matador men's volleyball. Jeff Campbell has now posted double figure win totals in 14 of his 16 seasons at the helm.

Senior John Baker is enjoying a career year during his senior season. The opposite from Racine, Wis., is averaging a career and team-high 3.45 kills per game while hitting a career-high .315. With 207 kills in the first 16 matches this season, Baker has eclipsed the 196 kills he put down as a freshman in 2010. One of only three Matadors that were on CSUN's 2010 team that reached the NCAA Final Four, Baker has 632 kills in his Matadors career while averaging 2.55 kills per game. The senior also leads Northridge this season with 79 digs giving him 279 digs in three-plus seasons.

After a one-match bump in the road last season, the Matadors have reclaimed their dominance over UC San Diego. CSUN had won 40 straight over the Tritons dating back to the 1988 season before UCSD won in four in The Matadome last season. But with a pair of 3-0 sweeps this season, the Matadors have now won 42 of the last 43 matches between the two teams. CSUN head coach Jeff Campbell improved to 29-1 against the Tritons, the most career wins for Campbell against one school.

In just under two seasons, sophomore setter Travis Magorien has moved into seventh-place in CSUN's rally scoring era with 805 career assists. After dishing out 293 in limited action as a freshman in 2012, Magorien has a team-high 512 assists (9.31 apg) this season. John Baxter holds the Matador rally scoring era record for assists with 5,164 from 1998-01 with Ty Tramblie (2000-04) second with 4,090.

16 matches into the 2013 season and the Matadors have not been swept 3-0. Of CSUN's six losses, five have come in four sets while the other was a five-set loss at UCLA in the season opener. The last Northridge team to go an entire season without being swept was the 2009 Matador team that finished 24-7 ... CSUN is a perfect 3-0 so far in March after posting records of 4-3 in January and 3-3 in February ... Friday's straight-set win over UC San Diego was the Matadors' first this season when they've lost the battle at the net. The Tritons out-blocked Northridge by the sizable margin of 11.5 to 4.0 but the Matadors out-hit UCSD .301 to .110. CSUN has out-blocked 10 opponents this season while winning nine of those 10 matches ... Junior libero Charlie Condron will have significantly less digs this season than last due to the Matadors switching to the two-libero format. Sharing time with freshman Nick Alegrado, Condron has 45 digs (0.71 dpg) after recording a team-high 177 digs (2.16 dpg) last season. Combined, Alegrado (54) and Condron have combined for 99 digs, an average of 1.57 digs per game.

Having become Cal State Northridge men's volleyball's all-time winningest coach during the 2010 season, Jeff Campbell is closing in on the latest milestone win of his 16-year Matador career. Having earned his 225th career win in Northridge's 3-0 win at UC San Diego on Feb. 24, 2012 Campbell now has a career record of 242-212 (.532). He reached the 150 and 200 career wins over the last four seasons and now sets his sights on his 250th career win. Currently, the third-longest tenured head coach at Cal State Northridge (men's golf coach Jim Bracken is in his 27th season & men's basketball head coach Bobby Braswell is in his 17th season) Campbell has now posted double figure win totals in 14 of his 16 seasons on the bench, notching a career-best 24 wins in 2009.

Friday's match against UCLA opens Northridge's final homestand of the 2013 season. The Matadors will close the home schedule next week against Cal Baptist (Mar. 20) and BYU (Mar. 22) before playing out the remainder of the 2013 regular season on the road.
