Robert Robinson 12th After Day One of Decathlon, Desirae Gonder Finishes 17th in Heptathlon

EUGENE, Ore. - Senior Robert Robinson stands 12th after the opening day of the decathlon while junior Desirae Gonder finished 17th at the conclusion of the heptathlon Thursday at the NCAA Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field.
Robinson totaled 3,840 points on the first day and is 660 points behind leader Ashton Eaton of Oregon. Robinson opened the competition with a time of 11.06 which earned him a seventh-place finish and 847 points. Next was one of Robinson's best events, the long jump, and the senior again finished seventh with a best of 23-2.50 (7.07) which added 830 points to his total.
Robinson then was 11th in the shot put with a top throw of 43-3.75 (13.20). He picked up 679 points for that effort and then had a chance to post a solid high jump and head into day two in the top-10.
But he only cleared a height of 5-11.25 (1.81) which was well below his season and career-best of 6-6.25 (1.99). Robinson finished 22nd after earning 636 points. The opening day closed with the 400 meters where he finished eighth in 49.28 to earn an additional 848 points.
In the heptathlon, Gonder improved to a 17th place finish with 2,103 points on the final day. Gonder was 19th after scoring 3,067 points on day one before finishing second in the long jump, 21st in the javelin and fifth in the 800 meters.
Gonder's day got off to an impressive start as she jumped 19-2 (5.84) to finish second only to eventual champion Brianne Theisen of Oregon who jumped 20-0.25 (6.10). Gonder earned 801 points before picking up 439 points in the javelin. After fouling on her first two throws, she posted a mark of 91-11 (28.02) to finish 21st.
The heptathlon concluded with the 800 meters and Gonder finished a solid fifth in a time of 2:17.13.
Also on Thursday, the women's 4x400 meter relay team of Jasmine Cox, Shelese Ruffin, Precious Watkins and Jackie Harrison finished 23rd in a time of 3:42.56 to failed to advance out of the preliminary round.
