LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Sherrina Lofton won the 100 and 200 meters on the women's side while De'Shawn Waters won both events for the Northridge men as Cal State Northridge men finished second and the women were third Saturday at the Cal-Nevada Championships.
The Matador women finished third with 81 points, trailing only UCLA (164.50) and San Diego State (84).
Lofton won a pair of events after posting a lifetime-best 11.57 to win the 100 meters and a season-best 23.67 to claim the 200 meters. Dominique Calvin also ran well in the 100 meters finishing fifth in the season-best 12.00. Crystal Spears ran a season-best 25.34 to finish 19th in the 200 meters prelims.
In the 400 meters, Shelese Ruffin led three Northridge sprinters in the top eight as she finished fourth in a season-best 54.30. Jasmine Cox finished fifth in 55.31 and Brenna Hoffman was eighth in 56.41. Hoffman ran a personal-best 56.10 in the prelims.
Stella Dugall finished 10th in the 100 meter hurdle prelims in a lifetime-best 14.25 and LaShandra Batiste was seventh in the 400 hurdles in a time of 62.51. Batiste ran 62.07 in the preliminary round.
In the distance events, Lilyana Morejon eclipsed her previous career-best in the 5,000 meters by clocking a time of 17:03.58. In the 10,000 meters, Sandra Velarde ran 38:58.20 to finish 15th and Nanci Velarde was 17th in a time of 39:07.59.
The 4x100 relay team took home the Cal-Nevada title in a time of 45.17 while the 4x400 relay finished second in a season-best 3:42.24.
Stephanie Ralls' championship in the javelin highlighted the field events for Northridge. Ralls threw a season-best 159-3 (48.54) while Haylee Varner was fifth at 135-9 (41.39) and Claire Morgan finished ninth at 119-0 (36.27) as the Matadors earned 16 points in the event.
Candyce Babb finished ninth in the long jump at 18-1 (5.51) and Morgan was 12th in the discus at 143-1 (43.62) which is a personal-best.
The Northridge men finished second to the host Bruins after scoring 96 team points. UCLA posted 215.50 points to win the men's crown.
De'Shawn Waters match Lofton by winning both the 100 and 200 meters. Waters clocked a season-best 10.44 in the 100 and shattered his previous season-best in the 200 with a time of 21.20. Ben Santos finished 12th in the 100 meter prelims with a time of 10.91.
Also in the 200 meters, Nic Taylor finished fifh in a season-best time of 21.50. Taylor was also the lone Matador to qualify for the 400 meters finishing fourth in a season-best 48.04.
In the hurdles, Michael Woodham finished seventh in the 110 meters with a time of 15.08 after posting a season-best 14.69 in the prelims. Lance Gonzales also reached the final, finishing eighth in 15.09. Gonzalez ran a season-best 14.78 in the prelims.
In the distance events, Gustavo Hernandez finished 11th in the 800 meter prelims in a time of 1:54.36 which is well under his previous lifetime-best. Bobby Olivera was ninth in the 5,000 meters after running 14:45.94 and Juan Olea was 15th in the 10,000 meters in a time of 33:50.72.
Like the women's squad, the Matador men captured the 4x100 relay in a time of 40.70 while the 4x400 team was seventh in 3:15.61.
In the field events, sophomore Reindell Cole took home the lone Matador crown with the long jump title. Cole jumped 25-1.75 (7.66) on his first attempt then held off the field. Cole's mark is a season-best. Gonzales was fifth at 22-9.75 (6.95) and Robert Robinson was ninth at 22-2.25 (6.76).
Derek Cooper led the Northridge throwers with a second place finish in the discus as he and Mike Tull both finished among the top four. Cooper threw 171-3 while Tull tossed a career-best 166-6. Cooper also took a third place finish in the shot put. Cooper threw 54-0.50 (16.47) while Chris Fuller was ninth at 50-6.75 (15.41).
Senior Cody Pearce rounded out the Matador scoring with a seventh-place finish in the hammer with a mark of 184-10 (56.89).
