Matadors Complete Action at San Diego State's Aztec Invitational

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Cal State Northridge sent a full squad to compete at the Aztec Invitational at the SDSU SportsDeck on Saturday. The Matadors followed up a solid outdoor season-opening home meet last weekend as several CSUN men and women set season and personal bests.

The Matador women performed well in the 800 meters as three runners set personal-bests. Jasmine Cox paced the women with an 11th place finish clocking a season-best of 2:13.07. Shane Mullany-Banks, in her first meet of the season, finished 15th in 2:15.12 while Natalie Wollaston (2:17.42), Desiree Karotko (2:17.65) and Vanessa Carr (2:17.81) all ran personal-bests.

Senior Sherrina Lofton ran her first outdoor race of the season and finished fourth in the 100 meters at 12.01. Precious Watkins was 14th in 12.20. Ashley Frazier ran both the 100 and 400 meter hurdles, finishing fourth in the 400 at 1:01.70 and 19th in the 100 at 15.36.

In the field events, sophomore Tiana Webberley had a solid showing in the pole vault, clearing a season-best 12-4.50 (3.77) to finish seventh. Jenna Hulion was 18th (11-0.75) and Cristi Allen was 24th (10-0.75). Ese Ntekume posted a season-best in the triple jump as she finished sixth with a best of 38-2 (11.63). She also was 16th in the long jump at 17-1.25 (5.21).

A pair of Matadors finished as high as ninth in the throws as Claire Morgan took ninth in the discus (140-3) and Whitney Hooks was ninth in the shot put (43-7.25). Erica Abaekobe was 15th in the shot tossing a season-best 41-3.25 (12.58) while Jamila McIntosh was 23rd with a season-best 37-6 (11.43) and Chelsea Wordell was 25th at 36-0.25.

Wordell was also 14th in the discus (123-10) followed by Sydney Hubbard in 16th (120-0) and McIntosh took 17th (101-6). Senior Haylee Varner had Northridge's top mark in the javelin finishing 12th with a season-best of 133-0 (40.53). Morgan also posted a season-best in the javelin at 103-0 (31.40).

On the men's side, Darquis Rucker finished eighth in the 100 and 17th in the 200 meters to lead the CSUN sprinters. Rucker ran a season-best 11.00 in the 100 and a season-best 22.26 in the 200. Dawaun Lucas was 14th in the 100 (11.52) while Khalid Jones (22.36) was 19th in the 200 meters followed by Fredy Santizo (23.97) and David Perez (24.89).

Gustavo Hernandez ran 50.24 to finish 19th in the 400 meters and Bobby Workman was seventh in the 400 hurdles at 54.79 followed by Deleon Carter at 56.96.

In the distance races, Trevor Carroll had CSUN's top finish in the 800 meters, posting a time of 1:58.83 to take ninth. Marvin Gonzales ran a PR of 1:59.89 to finish 11th while Eugene Sanchez (2:02.07) was 13th, Thomas Henry (2:07.90) was 14th and Miguel Galvez (2:08.14) was 15th.

Steven Gonzales had the Matadors' top time in the 1,500 meters as he ran a personal-best 4:00.13 to finish 11th. Hunter Hays was 15th in 4:06.92 and Gustavo Hernandez was 17th in 4:07.83. Julio Mora also PR'd with a time of 4:15.31 to finish 21st.

Cameron McAteer had CSUN's top finish among the field events, finishing seventh in the hammer with a top throw of 166-11 (50.87). James Poet was 12th (154-0) and Jose Aviles tossed a season-best of 126-6 to finish 13th. Poet posted a PR in the discus of 140-0 (42.67) to finish 18th followed by Tyler Milton (136-6) and McAteer (134-6). Aviles had CSUN's top mark in the shot put of 44-0.75 which was good for 13th.

In the jumps, Thomas Johnson cleared a best of 6-6 (1.98) to finish eighth following his height of 6-10.75 at last weekend's Northridge Invitational. Jory Rucker was the lone Matador in the long jump taking ninth with a best of 21-8 (6.60).

Matt Todd finished 11th in the pole vault with a season-best of 16-0.75 (4.90) while Alex Oleata competed in his first meet and finished 19th at 13-1.50 (4.00).

The Cal Nevada Championships and Stanford Invitational are up next for the Matador men's and women's track & field squads. The meet at Stanford runs Mar. 24-25 while the Cal Nevada Championships are Mar. 25-26 at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
