Matadors Wrap Up Competition at UCLA, Arizona State

Junior Reindell Cole followed up his long jump win at the Texas Relays with another long title this weekend at the ASU Sun Angel Track Classic as Cal State Northridge competed in both Arizona and UCLA.

Cole, who won the long jump at the prestigious Texas Relays two weeks ago with a season-best leap of 25-5.25 (7.75), posted a best of 24-6.50 (7.48) at ASU which was enough to grab the title. Derek Cooper also competed in the premiere section of the shot put and finished eighth with a mark of 56-3 (17.14).

Also on the track at Arizona State, Michael Woodham finished 15th in the 100 meters in a time of 10.99 followed by Ben Santos who was 20th in 11.09. Cole had the best time in the 200 meters running 21.85 followed by Nic Taylor who posted a time of 22.15. Taylor had Northridge's best time in the 400 at 49.80.

In the 110 meter hurdles, Robert Robinson was 11th in a time of 14.52 while Woodham was 15th in 14.84 and Owen Morse was 26th in 15.27.

In the high jump, Lance Gonzales finished ninth with a height of 6-7 while Cole was 11th after clearing 6-5. Eric Fremd took 14th in the long jump with a best of 20-9.25 and was also 18th in the triple jump at 46-7.25. Awet Hagos had Northridge's best triple jump at 46-8.25 and Gonzales posted a best of 46-7.25.

In addition to his shot put finish, Cooper was sixth in the discus with a mark of 180-10 (55.12) which was just off his season-best of 181-10. Alex Butler posted a huge PR in the hammer with a mark of 192-5 (58.65) while James Poet was 15th with a best of 159-0 (48.43). In the javelin, Robert Mestas was 15th with a best of 176-0 (53.66).

At UCLA's Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational, the Matador distance runners competed in the 800, 1,500 and 5,000 meter events.

Steven Gonzales finished 12th in the 800 with a time of 1:57.80 while Danny Garcia was 19th in 2:06.62. Gustavo Hernandez had the best Matador finish in the 1,500 meters with a lifetime-best 4:04.69 which was good for 20th. Miguel Galvez was 28th in 4:16.80 and Julio Mora was 31st in 4:19.83.

Hunter Hays led Northridge in the 5,000 meters as he finished 29th in a time of 15:50.15 while Juan Olea was 30th in 15:50.50.

David Perez also competed for Northridge in the 400 meter hurdles, finishing 12th in a time of 59.29.
