NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The 2013 edition of the Big West Track & Field Championships open this weekend (May 3-4) as the conference's top all-around athletes compete in the decathlon and heptathlon. The host Matadors will have seven student-athletes competing, four women in the heptathlon and three men in the decathlon.

The decathlon opens Friday at 2 p.m. with the first of 10 events, the 100 meters. Saturday's competition begins with the 110 meter hurdles at 11 a.m. Derrick Harris, Taylor Cudequest and Kevin Finley will represent the Matadors over the two-day event.

The heptathlon gets underway Friday at 2:30 p.m. with the 100 meter hurdles, the first of seven events on the women's side. The final three events on Saturday open with the long jump at 1 p.m. Jealinda Mills, Jordan DuFault, Stephanie Hicks and Niah Simmons will compete for the CSUN women.

11 men and 16 women have declared for the multi-events with Mikael Powers of UC Santa Barbara (6,806 pts.) and Samantha Balentine of Hawai'i (5,125 pts.) carrying conference-leading totals into the championship.

Harris has the Matadors' leading total in the decathlon after scoring a season-best 6,195 points at the Jim Click Multi-Events in Tucson on Apr. 5. Harris owns a lifetime-best of 6,465 points which he set at the Northridge Invitational at the beginning of the 2012 season. Cudequest ranks sixth in the Big West this season with a top total of 5,879 points also coming in Tuscon on Apr. 5. Finley does not have a complete decathlon this season but posted a career-best 6,407 points in finishing sixth at the Big West Championships at UC Irvine last season.

Jealinda Mills has the top point total among the quartet of CSUN women this season after scoring 4,525 points at the season-opening Northridge Invitational. Mills ranks seventh in the Big West heading into the championships this weekend. Jordan DuFault, who tallied a career-best 4,512 points to finish ninth at the 2012 Big West Championships, scored a season-best 3,927 points at the CSUN Invitational in March. Stephanie Hicks brings a season-best of 3,853 points into her first conference championship while Niah Simmons (3,155 pts.) will also be making her Big West Championships debut.
