NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - A pair of familiar foes will take the field at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. in this weekend's USSF D-2 Championship Match as former Matador men's soccer teammates Daniel Paladini and Edwin Miranda will do whatever it takes to help their team emerge as champions.
The only problem is that the duo will not compliment one another as they did during their days as a Matador because each will compete for their respective squad this Saturday evening - Paladini for the Carolina RailHawks and Miranda for the Puerto Rico Islanders.
Paladini, whose seven goals scored this season was second most on the club, led the RailHawks in games played (34) and finished tied with teammate Matt Watson for the most assists with five. Known for delivering in pressure-packed situations, Paladini delivered several clutch goals this season, including two away stoppage time goals and the game-winner against NSC Minnesota in the second leg of the quarterfinal.
Miranda, a member of the El Salvador National Men's Soccer Team returns to the Islanders at the right time; competing for the Hollywood United Hitman during the first part of the season, Miranda returned for his second stint with the Islanders and helped bolster their midfield during the latter part of their season.
Miranda originally joined the Islanders in 2006 and scored three goals during his two seasons with the squad.
While Paladini and his RedHawk teammates will enjoy home-field advantage in Saturday's decisive game, they will also face the unenviable challenge of entering the game with a two-goal deficit as the Islanders defeated the RedHawks 2-0 during the first leg of the series held at Juan Ramon Loubriel Stadium in Puerto Rico last Saturday.
Regardless of the outcome this Saturday, both Miranda and Paladini will have the opportunity to team up once again as both will be able to root for another former Matador, defender Sean Franklin, as his Los Angeles Galaxy will begin their postseason journey to the MLS Cup finals this Sunday afternoon against the Seattle Sounders.
