Senior Dylan Riley Named Big West Player of the Week
Sept. 21, 2009
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Cal State Northridge men's soccer senior Dylan Riley was named the Big West Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday. At the Prego Italian Express Invitational in Dallas, Texas, Riley had the game-tying goal against Tulsa and picked up the game-winning strike against SMU.
Riley, a defender from Thousand Oaks, Calif., found quite an opportune time to strike for his first two goals of the season. With Northridge trailing Tulsa 1-0, Riley connected with Ruben Rodriguez on a corner kick to head home the tying goal in the 75th minute. Less than three minutes later, Sunghyun Kim would beat the Tulsa goalkeeper to give CSUN a lead it would not relinquish.
Two days later, Riley used his head again to get on the scoresheet, taking a free kick from Rafael Garcia and directing it past the SMU goalkeeper to give CSUN a 2-0 lead. The Matadors would win that game 2-1, taking the tournament title in the process.
For his efforts in Dallas, Riley was named the tournament MVP and earned a spot on the all-tournament team. He also picked up a spot on the College Soccer News National Team of the Week.
For his career, Riley now has four goals and eight assists in three-plus seasons with the Matadors. This year, Riley shifted from a midfield position he had occupied for his first three seasons to a role as a center back due to injuries on the team.
Riley's award marks the second-straight week that a Matador has received the conference's Player of the Week award. Last week, senior Cameron Sims earned the award after scoring both game-winning goals for CSUN at the Matador Invitational.
Behind Riley and the team's efforts, head coach Terry Davila and the Matadors are riding a five-game winning streak into this weekend's matches. As part of the Big West Challenge at Cal State Fullerton, Northridge will face Denver on Sept. 25 at 5 p.m., and then face Coastal Carolina on Sept. 27 at 11 a.m.
