NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -
Former Matador and current LA Galaxy defender Sean Franklin has been named to the 2011 MLS All-Star First XI as one of the 11 top vote-getters in the fan-powered voting system for this year’s all-star match, Major League Soccer announced Sunday.
The First XI selections received the most votes at their respective positions from combined voting via twitter and text message and online at MLSsoccer.com.
Franklin, who was selected at fourth overall in the 2008 MLS SuperDraft by the Galaxy, was part of a 108-player ballot to determine the first 11 all-stars to be named to the team that will take on Manchester United at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J. on July 27.
Although being named to the First XI does not necessarily guarantee a starting nod, all First XI players are All-Stars and will be selected for the starting lineup by coach Hans Backe based on player availability and tactical considerations.
After a brilliant four-year career at Northridge that saw Franklin earn All-Big West First Team honors three times and Second Team once, he was named the 2008 MLS Rookie of the Year and team Defender of the Year.
As a member of this year’s First XI, Franklin joins elite company on the MLS All-Star team, including teammates Landon Donovan and David Beckham and New York Red Bulls stars Thierry Henry and Rafa Marquez.
