NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -
The Cal State Northridge Men's Soccer program released its 2011 schedule, head coach Terry Davila announced Tuesday. The Matadors have 19 games and one exhibition on this year's slate, including 11 under the lights at Matador Soccer Field.
Northridge comes off a tough 2010 season when it finished with a 3-14-2 record.
The season gets underway on Saturday, Aug. 20 with a scrimmage against Cal State Dominguez Hills at Matador Soccer Field. On Friday the 26th, the Matadors host Canisius College in the official season opener leading up to their first tournament of the season.
The Cal State Northridge Labor Day Classic will be a two-day event on September 1st and 3rd at Matador Soccer Field, and will feature two games each day. In addition to CSUN, the teams competing will be Cal State Fullerton, UNLV and defending national champion Akron.
The first game of the invitational will be between Fullerton and Akron, with the Matadors taking on the Rebels of UNLV in the night match. Two days later, Northridge hosts the Akron Zips, who defeated Louisville 1-0 in the 2010 College Cup and were national runners-up in 2009. That game will be played at 7 p.m. with the Titans and Rebels in the earlier match. Competition on both days starts at 4:30 p.m. with the second game scheduled for 7 p.m.
After hosting the Labor Day Classic, the Matadors will travel to New Mexico on September 9 to take part in the New Mexico Invitational with games against Missouri State and the University of New Mexico Lobos.
Following the trip, Northridge will play a match on the road against the Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners before hosting an Alumni Match on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. The non-conference slate will continue the following Friday as the Matadors will host Southern Methodist University under the lights before taking on Seattle University on Sunday the 25th at 11 a.m.
Cal State Northridge opens up Big West Conference play on the road at UC Davis on September 28. Game time against the Aggies is set for 3 p.m.
The conference home opener will be against the Titans of Cal State Fullerton; a team the Matadors defeated 3-0 on the road in 2010, on Saturday Oct. 1. That game will be followed up a week later with a match at UC Irvine, where the Matadors stunned the Anteaters 2-1 a year ago.
Northridge with travel to Cal Poly on October 11 for a mid-week contest against the Mustangs before taking on UC Davis for the second time.
A brief break from Big West play sees the Matadors driving down the 405 to take on the UCLA Bruins in Westwood. The non-conference match comes just after the halfway point of the conference season, and will allow Northridge to gear up for the final stretch.
The Matadors will battle UC Irvine at home on October 26 and have a quick turnaround as they play three nights later at home against Cal Poly.
Senior night for the Matadors is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 2 against the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos, who hosted the College Cup at Harder Stadium last season. The final contest of the regular season will come on the road at Cal State Fullerton at 7 p.m. on November 5.
This year's Big West Conference Tournament will take place on November 9th and 12th at a site to be determined.
