NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -
The Cal State Northridge Matadors have recruited eight players for the upcoming Men’s Soccer season, head coach Terry Davila announced today.
“Overall the class fits a couple needs. It gives us a little more quickness and shores up our back line,” Davila said. “The recruits we have coming in add stability for our team now and into the future. We are very excited to have them joining our program.”
Below are the players that currently make up the 2011 recruiting class for Northridge. In parentheses are the players’ last school (if applicable), high school and club soccer team (if given):
Jose Luis Garcia (Moorpark College/Poly HS/Valley United Soccer Club) - Jose Luis Garcia is a defender from Moorpark College and was named to the First Team All-Western State Conference in 2008 and 2009. Garcia was the team’s top scorer and has also played for the Valley United Soccer Club.
“Jose Luis Garcia is a defender who is going to add depth to our back line and he is very good in the air and at distributing balls over a distance,” said Davila. “He is a good shutdown defender.”
Rene Hernandez (Cerritos JC/Warren HS) - Rene Hernandez was named to the 2008 and 2010 First Team for the South Coast Conference for his work with Cerritos J.C. and helped Cerritos capture the 2008 State Championship for junior colleges.
“Rene is an excellent outside back who can cover the line and be a threat in the offensive third as well. He can shutdown the opponent’s best offensive player,” said Davila.
Trevor Morley (University HS/San Diego Surf Soccer Academy) – Trevor Morley was a member of the 2011 CIF Championship team for University High School in San Diego. Morely was a First Team All-CIF selection in 2010 and 2011 and has also played for the U-18 team at the San Diego Surf Soccer Academy.
“Trevor is a great athlete who is tall and can give us a great presence in the midfield. He excels and tackling and serving balls over great distance and has the ability to win balls for us in the air,” Davila said.
David Turcios (Birmingham HS) – David Turcios was named the West Valley League MVP and was a First Team All-City selection for Birmingham High School. Turcios was a member of the El Salvador U-18 National Team in 2010 and has also played for Real SoCal Soccer Academy.
“David is a very skilled midfielder and forward and has been selected to several different teams for his country,” said Davila. “He can give any kind of pass from any part of his foot that can lead to a scoring opportunity.”
Luis Ayala-Padilla (Mater Dei Catholic HS) – Luis Ayala Padilla is a goalkeeper out of Chula Vista, Calif. and prepped at Mater Dei Catholic High School. Padilla has also played for the San Diego Surf Soccer Academy and was named by the San Diego Union Tribune as a Top 25 Player to Watch from 2009-2011 and selected to the outlet’s All-Academic Team from 2008-2011.
“Luis is a very quick goalkeeper that can get to any shot put at the goal,” Davila said. “He has great distribution and he is an outstanding athlete.”
Carlos Gonzalez (Sylmar HS/Real SoCal Soccer Academy) – Carlos Gonzalez played prep soccer at Sylmar High School as a forward and has also played for Real SoCal Soccer Academy.
“Carlos is a smooth forward and carries the ball well with both feet. He is a very dangerous player,” said Davila.
Christian Gonzalez (Mission Viejo HS/United Futbol Club) – Christian Gonzalez has been a First Team All-League selection since his sophomore year and was named league MVP his senior year. He was the leading scorer in 2011 for United Futbol Club in the Coast Soccer Premier League with 15 goals and 11 assists and tallied a goal and an assist in the CYSA State Final to lead his side to the title and a No. 1 ranking among club teams in the nation.
“Christian is a prototypical center forward who is very goal dangerous in the offensive third,” said Davila. “He has great character and a good work ethic and will contend for a starting position on our team.”
Mynor Giron (Arizona Western JC/San Fernando HS/Real SoCal) – Mynor Giron comes to Northridge from Arizona Western Junior College, where he led the team to a regional final in 2011 and was named an All-Conference player. Giron was also selected to the Top 11 in the U.S. Soccer Academy in 2010 and led Real SoCal Soccer Academy to that season’s U.S. Academy Soccer Final.
“Mynor will add depth to our back line and is a tremendous leader and a great ball winner who is very good in the air,” said Davila. “He is as solid a defender as any in the country and we are very lucky to have him.”
Zach DeVille (University HS/San Diego Surf Soccer Academy) – Zach Deville is a forward out of University High School in San Diego. Deville captained the UHS squad that won the CIF title in 2011 and was named to the All-San Diego County team every year from 2007-10. He was named to the Cal South ODP ’93 Team in 2006 and 2007 and the ’92 Team in 2008. He has played for San Diego Surf since 2008 and was named the Cal South Player of the Year in 2008 and the Surf Club MVP in 2010-2011. Deville was in the U.S. National Pool from 2006-2008 and also was on the Region IV ODP ’93 Team during that stretch.
“Zach is a great offensive threat and he can play any of the midfield or forward spots on the field. He is very goal dangerous and athletic,” Davila said. “He is very quick in beating his opponents and has a great first step.”
