June 7, 2011

Edwin Rivas, a redshirt freshman from Los Angeles, Calif., is currently working in the Guatemalan National Team Camp with the U-20 squad competing for a spot on the U-20 World Cup team that is headed to Colombia for the tournament this summer.

Rivas joined the Matadors as a freshman in the fall of 2010 from the Santee Education Complex in Los Angeles and utilized his redshirt option last season. The forward will return to Northridge and work for a spot in the front line of attack for head coach Terry Davila this August.

“Any time a member of our team can represent his country, it is great for our program and the university,” Davila said. “Edwin’s experience at the national level will give him experience that he can use to help the team when he returns and into the future.”

Guatemala qualified for the U-20 World Cup after defeating the United States 2-1 in the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF championship in Guatemala City on April 6. The team will begin play in the U-20 World Cup on July 31 against Nigeria in Armenia, Colombia.
