Home Unbeaten Streak Ends Against #14 UC Santa Barbara

Oct. 29, 2008

Final Stats

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Camilo Rojas goal in the 32nd minute of play gave the Matadors (6-6-4. 2-2-3 BWC) an early 1-0 advantage against #14-ranked UC Santa Barbara (10-4-2, 5-1-1 BWC). But two goals scored within ten minutes of one another would be all the offense the Gauchos would need en route to a 3-1 victory Wednesday afternoon.

Unlike their previous meeting on October 8th, the Matadors were the ones who gained an early advantage as Rojas earned his sixth goal of the season, beating Gaucho goalkeeper Trond Helge Tasket to his right.

Throughout the first half, the Matadors were successful in dictating the pace of play, and were able to run a number of plays on offense that were nearly successful against a defense that had already given up 26 goals to their opponents this season.

Matador defensemen Robert Pate, Nicholas Hamilton, Ben Cox, and Dylan Riley were all successful in negating the threat of forward Chris Pontius, the Gaucho's primary offensive weapon for two-thirds of the match.

Bu it was in the sixtieth minute when Pontius was able to create just enough space to head-in a crossing pass and even up the score.

Ten seconds later, the Gauchos regained the lead on a breakaway goal scored by Gaucho forward Bongomin Otii, and in the 87th minute the Gauchos secured the victory with another goal scored from a free kick just outside the right-hand side of the penalty area.

The Matadors were successful in creating an number of scoring chances of their own throughout the second half, only to find their shots just sail high or wide from its intended target.

Cameron Sims retuned to the field for the Matadors having sat out the previous game due to a red-card suspension, and led all players with five total shots.

The Matadors currently occupy fourth-place in the Big West standings, only two points ahead of a UC Irvine squad that is scheduled to face Cal State Fullerton later on tonight.

The Matadors now have two full days to prepare for the UC Riverside Highlanders, a team that has already defeated nationally-ranked UC Davis at home, and looking for similar results against CSUN. Kick-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
