Box Score

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge Matadors (7-5-2, 2-2-1 BWC) earned their first conference tie of the season Wednesday afternoon as they competed for the full 110 minutes against the UC Davis Aggies and finished with a 0-0 tie.

CSUN will now travel to San Luis Obispo to face the Cal Poly Mustangs in their only match-up of the season. Kick-off is scheduled to take place at 11:00 a.m. at Alex G. Spanos Stadium.

For the second consecutive game, the Matadors were able to prevent their opponents from scoring as the Aggies chose to employ a quick-strike counterattack in an effort to break through CSUN's well-respected back-line.

Freshman goalkeeper Michael Abalos looked anything but a freshman as he wisely decided to come off his line on a number of occasions to quickly eradicate any Davis scoring opportunity from taking shape.

Having chosen to pack their half of the field with as many players as possible to prevent Northridge from scoring, the Matadors relied on their poise and patience during their possessions in an effort to crack through the Aggie defense.

CSUN was successful on a number of occasions as they were able to fire off five shots on goal, including a couple of headers that just sailed over the crossbar, but were unable to fire that one shot that would give them the game.

Renee Anguiano had the most dangerous scoring opportunity for Northridge in the 74th minute when he was on the receiving end of a give-and-go play that gave the midfielder an attempt to break the tie.

After correctly deciding to aim for the far post, his curling shot was barely deflected off the hands of the Aggie goalkeeper and just squirted past the outside half of the post.

Northridge now enters the second half of the Big West season with a 2-2-1 conference record; numbers strong enough to keep them in contention for one of four spots in the Second Annual Big West Postseason Soccer Tournament.

Up next for the men in red is a trip to Central California as the Matadors will face Cal Poly in a key conference match-up this Saturday morning. Kick-off is scheduled for 11:00 a.m., Matador soccer fans can listen to an audio broadcast of the game by visiting GoMatadors.com.
