Matadors End Road Trip With 2-1 Defeat in San Francisco

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Mattias Bonvehi's shot in the 74th minute helped the Cal State Northridge Matadors(0-6-1) tie the game at 1-1 and force extra time. But an empty net shot off a rebound in the 109th minute helped the San Francisco Dons (2-3-1) escape with a 2-1 victory in double overtime.

With their six-game road trip now complete, Northridge will return home and competa at Matador Soccer Field for the first time in almost a month when they face the Air Force Falcons in a Sunday morning match-up. This game will now kick-off at 11:00 a.m.

With the score tied at 0-0 at the half, San Francisco jumped out to an early lead when Tanner Smith scored on a header in the 48th minute to give his team the lead.

Having out-shot San Francisco 9-4 in the first half, the Matadors continued to attach the San Francisco net and was able to score in the 74th minute.

Bonvehi took a throw-in from Nicholas Hamilton and scored on a bicycle kick from point-blank range to tie the game at one apiece.

The goal was Bonvehi's first of the season, Hamilton also earned his first assist in 2010 on the play.

The score would remain tied at one until the final moments of the match when a shot by Brian Burke rebounded straight to teammate Oscar Englund who quickly capitalized on the opportunity to net the decisive shot of the game.

Only two minutes away from earning their second tie of the season, CSUN dominated San Francisco for a majority of the match. Playing a man down for the last 50+ minutes of the game due to a red card, Northridge ended up out-shooting San Francisco 20-18, and earned three times as many corner kicks as their opponents (9-3).

Blasting a season-high 20 shots, the duo of Rafael Garcia and Taylor Bowlin were responsible for one-half of their team's total as the former fired six shots, with the latter finishing with four shots of his own.
