NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -
After scoring three goals in a pair of victories this weekend, Cal State Northridge senior forward Brian Behrad was chosen as the Big West Conference Offensive Player of the week and was also named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week. Behrad scored the game-winning goal against San Diego on Friday and headed home a pair of goals to lead the Matadors to an overtime win over Saint Mary's on Sunday afternoon.
In addition to having a player named to the National Team of the Week for the second week in a row, the Matadors are continuing their ascent in multiple media polls. Cal State Northridge is ranked 16th by College Soccer News and 21st by TopDrawerSoccer.com heading into this week. The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), Soccer America and Soccer Times will release the results of their weekly polls later this week.
Behrad scored his first goal of the weekend on Friday afternoon against the San Diego Toreros at Matador Soccer Field. In the 42nd minute, he received a chipped pass from Steven Manios at the top of the box and found space between the goalkeeper and left post to put the Matadors ahead 2-0 in a match the team won 2-1.
On Sunday against the Gaels, Behrad used his head twice to help the Matadors come from behind and take the overtime decision. In the 56th minute, he headed home a cross from a corner kick by Chris Smith. Then with just six seconds remaining in overtime, Behrad's header from Beto Velasquez's cross sealed the match and helped CSUN improve to 4-0 for the first time since 1987.
Cal State Northridge will play its first matches away from home this season when the team travels to the University of New Mexico this week. CSUN will face Central Arkansas on Friday afternoon and the UNM Lobos on Sunday afternoon as part of the 2013 TLC Plumbing, Heating and Cooling Lobo Invitational.
