LOS ANGELES -

In the first night competition played in the history of Sullivan Field, the Cal State Northridge Matadors came away with a 2-0 victory against the Loyola Marymount Lions on Saturday night in Los Angeles. Pol Schonhofer Bartra scored a goal in the first half and Steven Manios added one in a scheduled overtime period to lead CSUN to victory.

The Matadors, defending Big West Conference Champions, started off the exhibition by controlling possession in the first half of play. Northridge outshot the Lions 6-1 in the opening 45 minutes and registered three shots on goal.

Schonhofer Bartra opened the scoring in the 18th minute after the Matadors won a free kick just outside the box on the left side of the goal. Facing a wall of defenders, Schonhofer Bartra curled his shot over the Lions and tucked it into the near side netting.

In the 77th minute of play, Loyola Marymount had its best chance at tying the match. Adrien Perez took a shot from seven yards out, but CSUN goalkeeper Kevin Marquez lunged to his left and plucked the ball out of the air to keep the lead intact.

Following 90 minutes of action, the two sides competed for another half-hour as a way to give players coveted time in game situations ahead of the regular season. In the 100th minute of play, the Matadors played a long ball up the right side of the field to forward Brian Behrad. Behrad then crossed the ball into the area where it was touched by Carlos Gonzalez to Manios, who tapped it easily into the net to put CSUN ahead 2-0.

The Matadors allowed just five shots over 120 minutes, including one shot on goal. In comparison, Northridge recorded 11 shots and put seven on target. Newcomer Damien Lewis saw 75 minutes in net for Northridge and went untested while a range of first-year players made an appearance as well.

Cal State Northridge opens the 2013 regular season on Friday, Aug. 30 against Albany at Matador Soccer Field. The Matadors are hosting the inaugural Ryan Rossi Memorial Tournament, which kicks off with Cal State Fullerton against Memphis at 5 p.m. The Matadors and Great Danes will follow approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first match.
