Defending Big West Champions Announce 2013 Schedule
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. –
The Cal State Northridge men's soccer team, winners of the 2012 Big West Conference Championship, will play another tough schedule in 2013. Northridge will square off against three teams that competed in the NCAA Tournament last year, two of which will be at Matador Field, and will also compete in a pair of early-season invitationals.
The Matadors will open the season on Saturday, Aug. 24, with an afternoon game on the road at Loyola Marymount. The next weekend, CSUN will host Cal State Fullerton, Albany and Memphis in the 2013 Cal State Northridge Labor Day Classic on Friday, Aug. 30, and Sunday, Sept. 1.
Northridge's home opener is set for August 30 against Albany at 7:30 p.m., immediately following Cal State Fullerton's game against Memphis earlier in the day. Two days later, the Matadors will meet the Tigers at 5 p.m. after the conclusion of Fullerton/Albany.
The Matadors will then welcome the University of San Diego to the San Fernando Valley on September 6 in a rematch of last season's NCAA Tournament Opening Round, a game in which the Toreros prevailed in double overtime. Northridge will also play host to Saint Mary's College on September 8 to conclude its home stand.
Following its match with the Gaels, CSUN will once again compete in the Lobo Invitational hosted by the University of New Mexico. The Matadors will open the competition against Central Arkansas on Friday, Sept. 13, before taking on the host Lobos on September 15.
"We are excited to play once again at such a storied program as New Mexico with one of the top head coaches in the NCAA," said reigning Big West Coach of the Year Terry Davila. "Coach [Jeremy] Fishbein runs an excellent program and is a skilled recruiter and the playing atmosphere at New Mexico is one of the best in the country."
Upon returning from Albuquerque, the Matadors will host both UNLV (9/20) and UCLA (9/28) at the end of September before closing out the month on the road against the Bradley Braves in the final non-conference game of the year.
Northridge opens its Big West title defense on the road against both Sacramento State (10/4) and UC Davis (10/6), where the team won its first championship since 2005 last season. The Matadors will then host Big West North Division rivals UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly on October 11 and 13, respectively.
Big West South Division play gets started at UC Riverside on October 19 before the team's final home stand of the year against Cal State Fullerton (10/23), UC Irvine (10/26) and UCR (11/2). Northridge will finish off the regular season on the road against the Titans (11/6) and Anteaters (11/9).
The Big West Conference Tournament is scheduled to occur the week after the regular season with semifinal games on Wednesday, Nov. 13 and the final on Saturday, Nov. 16.
