Matadors Hold Off Temple for 2-1 Victory

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -

A late goal for Temple University was not enough to complete a comeback effort as the Cal State Northridge Matadors (4-3-0) outlasted the Owls 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at Matador Soccer Field. Northridge saw goals scored by Beto Velasquez and Edwin Rivas before Jared Martinelli scored in the 89th minute to draw close.

Following a physical match on Friday night in a win over Army, the Matadors found themselves in another tough battle as six total cards were issued on the day.

The Matadors were the first to score in the match as Velasquez netted his third of the season in the 40th minute of play. Brian Behrad earned his first assist of the year after sending a cross into the box that Velasquez volleyed into the lower left corner of the net.

Following the play, CSUN defender Trevor Morley was shown the yellow card for an earlier foul in the build up to the goal.

Northridge took a 1-0 lead into the halftime break and held a shot margin of 13-2 with six shots on goal to Temple's two.

Sagi Lev-Ari had an early attempt on goal in the second half for the Matadors, but his shot was saved by Bobby Rosato. A cross into the box was headed to Lev-Ari, who spun and connected with a volley shot that went right to the goalkeeper.

In the first 15 minutes of the second half three cautions were issued to CSUN's Alberto Rosas and Chris Smith and Temple's Cody Calafiore.

Homero Rodriguez was cautioned in the 73rd minute of action, just minutes before the Matadors doubled their lead.

In the 78th, a Temple defender failed on his clearance attempt that was blocked by Rivas inside the goal box. Rivas took one touch and shot the ball into the lower right corner of the goal for his third tally of the season.

Just over a minute after the goal, Andrew Dodds was sent off for a dangerous challenge after losing the ball in his offensive third.

The Owls were able to end Northridge's shutout bid with a goal in the 89th minute by Martinelli. Ryan Bradbury led a charge into the middle of the field and found Martinelli, who slid the ball across the goal and into the right side netting for his first goal of 2012.

Overall, the Matadors led the shot margin 25-7 and also took more corner kicks 8-0.

Northridge goalkeeper Michael Abalos made three saves on the day to earn his 19th career victory and move into a tie for sixth all time at CSUN.

The Matadors hit the road for their next match on Thursday, Sept. 20 at the University of San Diego Toreros. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
