NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -
The Cal State Northridge Matadors have added Yarden Azulay to the 2011 recruiting class, head coach Terry Davila announced Thursday. Azulay, from Jordan Valley, Israel, will become the second Israeli-born player and third from overseas on the squad, joining defender Yuval Barak and goalkeeper Manabu Kaji.
Azulay joins the Matadors as an incoming freshman after serving three years in the Israeli Army. He is an attacking midfielder that has the ability to create opportunities for himself and his teammates to score, said Davila.
Azulay played club soccer for the Beitar Jerusalem F.C. (Israel) youth team while in high school. With Beitar Jerusalem, Azulay helped his side to three league championships and two national trophies, securing the coveted double title in his final season.
"To be able to add a player with his experience in Israel and his maturity level is definitely an addition to our program," said Davila. "We respect him and expect great things from him here at CSUN."
Azulay is currently leaning toward majoring in either economics or business management.
