Nick Delio, Jeff Freund Earn 2010 All-Big West Honors

May 12, 2010

Cal State Northridge had a pair of golfers named to the 2010 All-Big West team as junior Nick Delio captured first team honors for the third time and senior Jeff Freund was named honorable mention.

Delio, a junior from Valencia, Calif., was named to the first team for the third consecutive season. With the NCAA Regional (May 20-22) yet to play, Delio has posted a 71.48 stroke average which would be a Northridge single-season record. He already owns the top two scoring averages after averaging 71.94 strokes as a sophomore in 2008 and averaging 72.40 as a freshman in 2009.

This season, Delio has so far taken 2,359 strokes over 33 rounds and has five top-10 finishes and five top-20 finishes. He fired a season-low round of 67 in the second round of the Anteater Invitational where he went on to finish second.

"Nick's having another great season," said Matador head coach Jim Bracken. "He broke his school record for single season scoring average and earning first team honors for the third straight season is a testament to his hard work and consistency."

Freund, a senior from Fresno, Calif., completed his finest season at Northridge with a 14th-place finish at the Big West Championship on May 4. Freund wound up with a 73.41 stroke average and posted a pair of top-10 finishes and one top-20 finish.

Freund's best tournament of the season came in early April when he finished as runner-up at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic at Talking Stick G.C. in Scottsdale, Ariz. Freund finished with rounds of 68-69-68 to finish at (-5) 205, the best 54-hole score of any Matador player this season.

"Jeff had a great senior season," said Bracken. "He was our team captain and led by example all year long. His 73.4 stroke average puts him in the top-10 in school history so this all-Big West award is well deserved.

UC Irvine also claimed two of the six first team All-Conference spots, the only club to have multiple first team all-stars.
