SIMI VALLEY, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge men's golf team fired a blistering opening-round 276 and followed up with a second round 284 to lead the Bill Cullum Invitational by six shots heading into Tuesday's final round at Wood Ranch GC.
The Matadors (560), who have never won their own tournament in 12 previous tries, lead second place Long Beach State (566) by six shots and third place Loyola Marymount (569) by nine strokes after two rounds. North Texas (577) in currently fourth and Cal State San Bernadino (578) rounds out the top five in the 12-team field.
Senior Erik Jarvey heads the Northridge charge as the senior fired an opening-round 66 (-6) followed by a second round 70 (-2). Jarvey, at 136 (-8), trails Arizona State's Tristan Bierenbroodspot and North Texas' Michael Lee who lead after two rounds at 135 (-9). Lee carded a tournament and course record 62 (-10) in Monday's second round.
Piper also looks to challenge on the final day as the junior opened with a 72 (E) in the first round and posted a 68 (-4) in round two. Piper is currently 10th at 140 (-4) just five shots off the pace. Senior Clint Oleson and junior Jeff Freund are both tied for 13th at 142 (-2) after Oleson posted scores of 68-74 and Freund had rounds of 70-72. Sophomore Nick Delio rounded out the Northridge Red team scoring as he is tied for 41st at 149 (+5) after rounds of 75-74.
The Matadors also sent a black team which was led by Satch Hermann's 29th place finish. Hermann posted back-to-back rounds of 73 to sit at 146 (+2). Greg Gauvin is three shots behind Hermann in a tie for 41st at 149 (+5) after rounds of 75-74, Shane Blanchard is tied for 53rd at 151 (+7) after rounds of 77-74, Jason Rosenkranz is tied for 57th at 154 (+10) after rounds of 73-81 and Arthur Chung is tied for 71st at 159 (+15) after rounds of 82-77.
Tuesday's final round of 18 holes begins with tee times beginning at 8 a.m. at Wood Ranch GC.
