Matadors Move Up To 14th-Place Finish at Del Walker Intercollegiate

LONG BEACH, Calif. - After two straight top-10 team finishes, Cal State Northridge slipped to a 14th-place finish at the Del Walker Intercollegiate at Virginia C.C. Junior Nick Delio paced the Matadors with a 13th-place finish.

The Matadors, who finished eighth at the season-opening Purple and Red Invitational in Utah and were second at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate, carded an opening-round 372 and could only move up one spot after the third and final round. Northridge finished with rounds of 372-351-365 to finish at (+38) 1088 and 14th in the 16-team field.

Colorado State won the team title with a three round (-20) 1030 which was nine strokes better than second place Long Beach State (1039). Oregon (1042), Santa Clara (1048) and UC Santa Barbara (1052) rounded out the top five.

Individually, Long Beach State's Michael Drake took home medalist honors with an 11 under-par 199. Riley Arp of Colorado State and Scott Travers of Santa Clara tied for second at nine under-par 201.

Delio posted his second top-20 finish of the season to go with his ninth-place finish at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate. The junior from Valencia, Calif., finished at three under-par 207 after rounds of 71-67-69. No other Matador golfer was in the top 50.

Senior Casey Piper ended up tied for 62nd at (+7) 217 after rounds of 72-71-75, senior Jeff Freund tied for 69th at (+11) 221 after rounds of 78-73-70 and junior Matt Siporin and freshman Chris Russo tied for 78th at (+13) 223. Siporin, competing in his first tournament for Northridge, rebounded from an opening-round 78 to post scores of 68-76 over the final two rounds. Russo finished with rounds of 76-72-75.

Junior Davis Kirkland was 98th after an opening-round 75 and a final round 83 but was disqualified for signing an incorrect scorecard in the second round.

The Matadors have a quick turnaround as they host the Bill Cullum Invitational next Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 26-27 at Wood Ranch G.C. in Simi Valley. Northridge is the defending champion after taking home its first Cullum title in 2008.
