LONG BEACH, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge men's golf team posted a final round 293 which dropped them from eighth to ninth place after the final round of the Del Walker Intercollegiate at Virginia C.C.
The Matadors had their highest round of the tournament on Friday (293) but still posted their second top-10 finish of the fall season and their best tournament score to date. Northridge finished sixth at 869 in the season-opening Ron Moore Invitational in Denver, Colo., and also have one top-five finish at the Saint Mary's Invitational where they posted a team score of 867.
Northridge, in eighth after two rounds on Thursday, finished with team rounds of 287-285-293--865 (+13) but was passed by UC Santa Barbara (862) which posted a 286 in the final round on Friday. Colorado State (811), which held a 21-stroke lead after two rounds, pulled away from the field to win by 23 shots over second-place UC Irvine (834). Host Long Beach State (842) took third followed by Pacific (848) and Texas-San Antonio (852) rounded out the top five.
Erik Jarvey was the highest Northridge finisher as the senior from Palmdale, Calif. finished tied for 21st after a final round 73 (+2). Jarvey completed rounds of 69-72-73 to finish at 214 (+1) just two shots off his season-best 54-hole total. Nick Delio finished tied for 26th after posting his second consecutive round of 71. The sophomore from Valencia finished with rounds of 73-71-71 for a three round 215 (+2). After finishing in third place at the season-opening Ron Moore Invitational, Delio has now finished 30th and 26th in his last two tournaments.
Also for the Matadors, senior Clint Oleson and junior Casey Piper finished tied for 42nd at 219 (+6). Oleson finished with rounds of 73-71-75 while Piper posted rounds of 72-71-76. Junior Satch Hermann stayed in 61st-place after a final round 74 left him at 226 (+13) and senior Greg Gauvin competed as an individual and finished 73rd at 241 (+28) after rounds of 83-77-81.
Colorado State's Zahkai Brown took individual medalist honors after posting a three-round 196 (-17) which was eight shots better than UC Irvine's John Chin and CSU teammate Dustin Morris who finished at 204 (-9).
Cal State Northridge returns to action Oct. 27-28 as the Matadors host the 13th Annual Bill Cullum Invitational at Wood Ranch Golf Club in Simi Valley.
