PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. - Freshman Casey Piper fired an even-par 142 over the first two rounds and is tied for eighth place while the Cal State Northridge men's golf team is second heading into Tuesday's final round at the Saint Mary's Invitational at Poppy Hills GC.
The Matadors carded team rounds of 295-281 for a two round 576 (+8) and trail team-leader San Francisco (572) by four shots. Wisconsin (577) is third followed by Notre Dame (579) and Texas-Arlington (579) in the 17-team field.
Piper, a freshman from Simi Valley, carded an opening round 77 (+6) but came back with a sizzling second round 65 (-6) to finish Monday at even par 144. Piper, Greg Gauvin and Jeff Freund are all in the top 20 after two rounds. Gauvin and Freund are both tied with seven other golfers for 20th at 146 (+4). Gauvin carded rounds of 75 (+4) and even-par 71 while Freund finished with rounds of 72 (+1) and 74 (+3). Senior Erik Jarvey is one shot back in a tie for 29th at 147 (+5) after rounds of 76-71, sophomore Nick Delio is tied for 41st at 148 (+7) after rounds of 72-76 and Jason Rosenkranz is tied for 54th at 150 (+8) after back-to-back rounds of 75.
Domingo Jojola of San Francisco holds a two-stroke lead after two rounds at 137 (-5). Notre Dame's Doug Fortner is currently second at 139 (-3) followed by a pair of golfers at -2. Piper is just five shots off the pace heading into Tuesday's final 18 holes.
