Matadors Sit Fifth After Two Rounds of 2010 Big West Championship

MISSION VIEJO, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge men's golf team posted rounds of 295-301 and is in fifth-place after two rounds of the 2010 Big West Championship. Individually, Chris Russo is in fourth place to lead Northridge at Mission Viejo C.C.

The Matadors (596), looking to improve on last season's sixth-place finish, are 20 strokes behind team-leading UC Irvine (576) heading into Tuesday's final round.

UCI holds the lead after putting together consecutive rounds of 288 for the first two rounds. Second place belongs to Pacific at +15, while third place is split between UC Santa Barbara and Long Beach State at +16. Cal State Northridge sits in fifth at +20 with UC Davis (+28) and Cal Poly (+35) wrapping up day one in sixth and seventh, respectively. Cal State Fullerton and UC Riverside round out the standings with a score of +37.

Russo, a freshman from Westlake, Calif., carded back-to-back rounds of 70 and is fourth at four under-par 140. Russo heads into the final 18 holes trailing John Chin of UC Irvine by just two shots. Chin posted rounds of 68 and 70. Pace Johnson of Cal Poly is third at -2. UC Santa Barbara's Andrew Gunson and Pacific's Patrick Kucich are in a tie for 4th at even par. Chin and Johnson also carded the low round of the day at 68, both of which came in round one.

Jeff Freund and Nick Delio are also in the top-20 after two rounds. Freund is tied for 15th at (+4) 148 after rounds of 75-73 and Delio is tied for 20th at (+8) 152 after rounds of 73-79. Delio is seeking his third straight top-20 finish at the conference championship.

Matt Siporin is tied for 36th at (+14) 158 after rounds of 77-81 and Casey Piper rounded out the Matador scoring as he sits 44th at (+20) 164 after rounds of 85-79.
