SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Cal State Northridge men's golf carded a final round 289 and moved up two spots on Tuesday to finish in sixth place at the Big West Championship at San Luis Obispo C.C. Sophomore Nick Delio paced the Matadors with a 16th place finish.
The Matadors, who were eighth after rounds of 300 and 302 on Monday, posted their best round of the tournament on Tuesday with a final round 289. Northridge overtook UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly to move into sixth place at 891.
UC Davis won the team title with a three-round score of 861 followed by two-time defending champion UC Irvine (868), Pacific (868), UC Riverside (882) and Long Beach State (886). The Matadors were sixth followed by Cal Poly (895) and UCSB (897).
After struggling to stay around even-par for the first two rounds, Northridge had three golfers shoot even-par or better on Tuesday.
Delio, a First Team All-Big West selection, finished Tuesday with the Matadors only sub-par round of the tournament as he posted a one under-par 71. After rounds of 74-75 on Monday, Delio wound up tied for 16th at four over-par 220.
Senior Clint Oleson, who began the day in 17th place, finished 21st at six over-par 222 after a final round (+2) 74. Oleson was consistent throughout the tournament posting three consecutive rounds of 74.
Jeff Freund moved up one spot to 24th after his best round of the tournament, 74 on Tuesday. Freund finished at (+9) 225 after rounds of 76-75-74.
Jason Rosenkranz and Erik Jarvey rounded out the Matador scoring as both finished tied for 28th at (+11) 227. Jarvey, a Second Team All-Big West pick, finished with rounds of 76-79-72 while Rosenkranz posted rounds of 77-78-72.
UC Davis' Austin Graham (74-70-69) edged out teammate Ramie Sprinkling (72-71-70) in a one-hole sudden-death playoff to earn individual medalist honors. Both players concluded the championship with identical three-under-par scores of 213.
