Erik Jarvey Captures Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational; Matadors Finish Third
Feb. 10, 2009
ST. GEORGE, Utah - Senior Erik Jarvey fired a final round (-1) 71 to finish regulation tied but won Individual Medalist honors on the first playoff hole and Cal State Northridge finished third at the Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational at Sunbrook Golf Club.
The third-place team finish is the Matadors best since the winning their own Bill Cullum Invitational in October. In tough conditions, Northridge posted rounds of 297-294 for a two-round total of (+15) 591. The Matadors finished seven shots behind team champion San Jose State (584) and one back of second-place Washington State (590).
"We played OK, I'm certainly not disappointed with a third-place finish," said Matador head coach Jim Bracken. "It's a good start for the spring and under the conditions I thought we played well."
Jarvey won a one hole playoff with Washington State's Nick Ellis to claim individual medalist honors. Ellis hit his tee shot out of bounds and Jarvey parred the extra hole to clinch the title. Northridge's leading scorer coming out of the fall, Jarvey finished with rounds of 70-71 for a two-round (-3) 141. He improved on his second place finish at Northridge's Bill Cullum Invitational.
"It felt really good to win," said Jarvey. "I felt I could have won the Cullum too. But just knowing that I could win is a big factor."
Jarvey said the conditions were not a factor for him.
"Being from Palmdale, I'm used to playing in cold weather," he added.
Nick Delio was Northridge's second top-five finisher as the sophomore fired the low round of the day, a final round (-2) 70, to finish three shots off the pace at even-par 144. Junior Casey Piper, competing as an individual, moved into a tie for 23rd at (+7) 151 after rounds of 78-73 while junior Jeff Freund was a shot behind Piper at (+8) 152 which was good for a tie for 27th.
Senior Clint Oleson tied for 41st at (+10) 154 after rounds of 77-77, sophomore Jason Rosenkranz (also an individual) tied for 71st at (+17) 161 after rounds of 79-82, Shane Blanchard (individual) finished 87th at (+21) 165 after rounds of 84-81 and Satch Hermann was forced to withdraw in Tuesday's final round after posting a 77 on Monday.
Cal State Northridge will return to the course Feb. 23-24 as the Matadors compete in the All-American Intercollegiate at Cypresswood G.C. in Spring, Texas.
"We'll practice for the next two weeks and then we're off to Houston," added Bracken.
