ST. GEORGE, Utah - Senior Erik Jarvey fired an opening round (-2) 70 and is tied for second place while the Cal State Northridge men's golf team is tied for third after one round of the Pat Hicks Invitational at Sunbrook Golf Club. Today's first round was delayed by more than an hour by light snowfall on the course but all players were able to complete the opening round.
"Today was a strange day," said head coach Jim Bracken. "We had every kind of weather imaginable from rain to snow to hail. It was experience for our guys who have never played in snow."
The Matadors carded a team round of 297 and trail team-leading Southern Utah and San Jose State by six shots heading into Tuesday's final 18 holes. Northridge is currently tied with Denver at 297 and is two shots in front of Washington State (299) in the 14-team field.
Jarvey, a senior from Palmdale, Calif., is tied with Southern Utah's Jeff Evans at (-2) 70. Both are one shot behind first round leader Nick Ellis of Washington State. Jarvey shot a 36 on the front nine and carded a 34 on the back nine.
Sophomore Nick Delio (Valencia, Calif.) is tied for 15th at (+2) 74 after a front nine 38 and a back nine 36. Jeff Freund (Fresno, Calif.) is currently tied for 27th at (+4) 76, Clint Oleson (Prescott, Ariz.) and Satch Hermann (Ventura, Calif.) are tied for 39th at (+5) 77.
"It was a tough day out there today," said Bracken "The guys battled, Erik played real well, but certainly could have shot better. He missed a couple of putts but we're in the final group on Tuesday so we're definitely in position to win."
