Nick Delio Leads, Matadors Seventh After Two Rounds of Anteater Invitational

Feb. 7, 2011

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - Senior Nick Delio carries a three-shot lead into Tuesday's final round while his Cal State Northridge team is in seventh place after two rounds of the Anteater Invitational at Big Canyon C.C.

Delio posted an opening round (-1) 71 but blistered the Big Canyon Course with a five under-par 67 in the second round to move to the top of the leaderboard at (-6) 138. He carries a three-stroke lead over both Santa Clara's Scott Travers and Cal Poly's Geoff Gonzalez. Ironically, the trio of players comprise the last three California Amateur Championship winners as Delio won in 2008, Gonzalez in 2009 and Travers in 2010.

As a team, the Matadors posted rounds of 302 and 290 and sit seventh at 592. CSUN is just seven shots behind UC Irvine who is second at 585. Arizona leads the team chase as the Wildcats posted rounds of 285-292 to hold a eight shot lead heading into Tuesday's final round.

"We didn't play very well in the first round," said Matador head coach Jim Bracken. "We didn't get that fifth score and had to count an 82. If we had another 76 we're right there in second or third. We had the low second round at 290 and it certainly helped that Nick shot five-under."

In addition to Delio, Chris Russo is tied for 22nd at four over-par 148 after rounds of 74-74, Matt Siporin is tied for 26th at five over-par 149 after rounds of 75-74, Arthur Chung is tied for 53rd at (+13) 157 after rounds of 82-75 and Satch Hermann is is 63rd at (+26) 170 after rounds of 88-82.

"I'm hoping to have a good final round and at least get in the top-five," added Bracken. "We're not looking back we're just looking ahead. It's a good golf course and I think we're capable of shooting another 290 or better."

The Matadors will be paired with Saint Mary's and Cal State Fullerton in Tuesday's final round which begins at 7 a.m.
