COSTA MESA, Calif. - Junior Nick Delio led the Cal State Northridge men's golf team with a second place finish but the Matadors carded a final round 292 but slipped from second to third at the Anteater Invitational at Mesa Verde CC.
Delio, who was second behind UC Irvine's John Chin after two rounds, picked up a stroke on Chin Tuesday with a final round 70 but still finished four shots back. Delio finished the tournament with rounds of 69-67-70 for a (-7) 206 finish. Chin finished at (-11) 202 after rounds of 66-65-71. Loyola Marymount's Jake Sarnoff had the low round of the day firing a 65 to move into third place at 208 (72-71-65).
No other Matador golfer was able to crack the top-20 as Jeff Freund and Chris Russo tied for 21st at (+5) 218. Freund, who was tied for eighth after two rounds on Monday, slipped to a final round 77 while Russo carded a final round 74. Freund wound up with rounds of 71-70-77 while Russo carded rounds of 71-73-74.
Senior Casey Piper carded his best round of the tournament on Tuesday with an even-par 71. Piper wound up with rounds of 74-76-71 to move into 38th-place at (+8) 221. Shane Blanchard struggled to a final round 84 to drop into a tie for 51st at (+17) 230. Blanchard posted rounds of 70-76 on Monday.
UC Irvine stormed back to win the team title in a one-hole playoff as the Anteaters fired a final round of 280 to tie Santa Clara after 54 holes.
UC Santa Barbara and the Matadors tied for third with a 54-hole total of 859, while Saint Mary's was fifth (868), Loyola Marymount was sixth (869) and Sacramento State was seventh (877). Cal Poly (883), UC Riverside (887) and Cal State Fullerton rounded out the top 10.
