Matadors Sit Second After Two Rounds at Anteater Invitational
Feb. 1, 2010
COSTA MESA, Calif. - Both the Cal State Northridge golf team and Nick Delio sit in second place after two rounds at the Anteater Invitational at Mesa Verde Country Club. Jeff Freund is also in the top-10 heading into Tuesday's final round.
"We played pretty solid today but we can certainly play better as a team and hopefully give ourselves a chance to catch Santa Clara," said Matador head coach Jim Bracken. "I'd like to have all five guys shoot under par which is very possible."
Delio fired rounds of 69-67 on Monday and is second, five shots behind UC Irvine's John Chin at (-6) 136. Chin carded rounds of 66-65 and leads the field at (-11) 131.
"Nick missed some putts that he thought he should make today," said Bracken. "But overall he hit the ball really well."
Senior Jeff Freund also played well and is tied for eighth at (-1) 141. Freund carded rounds of 71-70 on Monday. After an even-par round of 71 in the first round, Chris Russo slipped to a second-round 73 and is tied for 16th at (+2) 144. Shane Blanchard is tied for 26th at (+4) 146 after rounds of 70-76 and Casey Piper is tied for 42nd at (+8) 150 after rounds of 74-76.
"We didn't play a lot over the last couple because of the rain," added Bracken. "But I'm pleased with the way we played in our first two rounds of the spring."
Santa Clara carded team rounds of 278-276 for a 14-under total of 554 and leads the Matadors (281-286--567) and UC Irvine (568) in the 10-team field.
The final 18 holes are scheduled for Tuesday.
